After they had a chance to settle in and relax on the island for a couple of days, we took the ferry across the channel and met them at their condo.  They were open to photos anywhere and everywhere on the island so we took some group and couple's photos in front of some of the beautiful plants and the pond by their condo.

I asked Shannon to act natural with her brother and I love the response I got!

Then we jumped in the golf carts and headed to one of my favorite boardwalks.  It isn't wide enough to fit the whole family so we did some fun couples and individual photos.

After the session we worked together to put all of Kathy's favorite photos in a Family photo album and she got several metal art pictures to decorate her home.  Rick and Kathy have gone through alot in their 40 years together but keep smiling, laughing and loving each other.

Manasota Key Senior and Family Photoshoot with Diedre and Troy Diedre and Wade are from Louisville, Kentucky but were visiting family on Manasota Key.  They thought this would be a great opportunity to get Senior photos done for their daughter Kyleigh and were excited about including the whole family for their beach session.

We met at Tamarind Gulf and Bay Condominium on the island and started our session down at the docks on the Intercoastal Waterway.  We were able to capture some fun pictures of the kids together and the whole family around the property.

As we approached Golden Hour, the last few minutes before the sun sets, we walked across the street to the beach to capture some more photos.  Kyleigh had a couple of different dresses that she wanted to wear to capture different looks.

We got the whole family back together for some more photos as the sun started to set.

Back home they love their photos on metal and proudly display the other pictures around the house.

Manasota Key Beach Family Photoshoot with Genna and Andrew Even though I'm at the beach every week photographing families, I never get tired of it.  Each family is different and I know that every single day at the beach is slightly different.  Once in a while we have the "perfect day" with no wind to mess up your hair, just enough clouds in the sky to get a beautiful sunset, and it's a comfortable temperature without humidity.  But the truth is that Mother Nature has her own agenda and it's the uniqueness of each day that makes a session interesting.

On the evening of Gennavieve and Andrew's family session, the typical summer thunderstorm clouds starting rolling in as Mike and I drove to Blind Pass Beach to meet them.  As we sat in the parking lot waiting for them to arrive, Mike asked if we should reschedule the shoot with them.  Knowing they had spent time getting ready, I wanted to at least try to get in some photos before the inevitable rain started.

When the family arrived, we decided to have our session and hope for the best.  With the clouds creating a beautiful soft light on the beach, we went directly over to my favorite tree tunnel and captured some family photos there.

Then we headed down to the water and took some group photos.  The sun rays behind them coming out from the clouds make for a gorgeous background.  A few minutes later we turned to see a rainbow so we took advantage of that!

This was the baby's first vacation at the beach, so it was important to capture all of her cuteness and she laid on her blanket and dipped her toes in the Gulf.

Without the harsh sun blinding the family, we captured Pam and Tim separately with the kids.

We ended our session just before sunset as the lightning started flashing in the distance.  I was surprised that we got the whole session done and captured a huge variety of photos.

Pam and Genna now have beautiful family photos displayed in their home.  Pam even told me that Genna left the session saying she might have found a new career...coordinating family photoshoots in the future!  I hope to see them again someday!

Boca Grande Engagement Session with Mary and Drew Mary and Drew have known each other since Elementary School.  They played together growing up and along the way, their friendship turned to true love.  Now they've graduated from college and are excited about their wedding in Boca Grande next spring.

Drew's family has a house on the island and he's spent years visiting every chance he could.  Mary had several spots where she wanted to capture their engagement photos so we started on Banyan Street.

Since their wedding will be at the Methodist church, we stopped there to capture some photos in front of the fabulous red door.  Then Mary asked if we could take a picture with a cute blue golf cart on the street, which of course we did!

Boca Grande Photoshoot with Dan and Jackie O'Dowd I met Jackie and Dan O'Dowd as they were planning their daughter Lexie's wedding on Boca Grande at the Gasparilla Inn.  I had the pleasure of photographing the bridal brunch and rehearsal dinner.

A couple of weeks after the wedding I was back in Boca Grande to photograph them.  Venice Lifestyle Magazine wanted to feature Dan in the June issue about Gentlemen and he happily obliged.  Dan and Jackie used this as an opportunity to dress up so we could capture some amazing photographs of them as a couple.

They custom built and decorated their home on Boca Grande so we started there.  Dan looked handsome in his new tuxedo and Jackie was radiant in a beautiful gown.

In the end they are thrilled with the photos I captured and Venice Lifestyle Magazine is honored to feature their family and their accomplishments!  Dan has not only had a successful career as the General Manager of the Colorado Rockies, he's currently an analyst on the MLB Network and has launched a tech start-up with this son Chris.  WIN Reality provides Virtual Reality training for baseball and softball players to practice, learn and improve their hitting capabilities.

Venice Yacht Club Wedding with Abbie and Sam When Sam and Abbie started planning their wedding, they knew they wanted it at the Venice Yacht Club.  Abbie's parents are members, and everyone loves spending time there gathering with friends, eating great food and enjoying their boat.

It was a pleasant Sunday morning when I met Abbie at her parents' house on Venice Island to photograph her getting ready.  They couldn't wait to show off their cute robes and fun socks!

Abbie's bouquet and boutonnieres were from Venetian Flowers on Tamiami and she made sure everything was in place before she walked down the aisle.

The cloudy sky kept the day from being too warm as the guests gathered around the flagpole.  Sam entered from the tiki bar area and Abbie's father walked her down the aisle.

Englewood Beach Wedding with Taylor and Maeve They've been best friends since college and finally realized they are each other's true love.  Maeve and Taylor decided their perfect wedding would be on Manasota Key in March.  They planned a morning wedding and I met Taylor at The Pearl Beach Inn as she was finishing getting ready.  Her friends were doing her hair, makeup and helping her into her dress.

Then it was down to The Beach House where Maeve was getting ready and where the ceremony was taking place.  They made a last-minute decision to do a First Look so that they could see each other and spend a few minutes alone before the ceremony.

From the first time we talked, they knew they wanted to end their session by getting in the water.  Because they are planning a reception back home, Taylor wanted to keep her wedding dress to wear later on.  She changed into a light cotton dress she bought specifically to get wet.  Maeve was more than willing to go into the water in her dress.  For 10 minutes they laughed, played and got soaked in the cool Gulf water.  I captured it all and it was the perfect way to end the afternoon.

Congratulations Taylor and Maeve.  I know your friendship and love will last a lifetime.

Manasota Key Beach Wedding with Emily and Kevin From the beginning it was planned as a simple family affair.  They live in Michigan but knew they wanted to get married on Englewood Beach on Manasota Key.  They weren't even planning on having a wedding photographer until Emily's mom realized that she wanted more than IPhone photos of her daughter's big day.

They flew in on Thursday and I met them at the condo they had rented on the Key to go over all of the details of the day.  Two days later, it was time for them to get married.

Although they were staying on the bayside, they had access to a section of beach away from the main public areas.  They rented an arch and chairs from A's Event Rental in Venice and set it up in the morning.  Emily had her hair done at James Griffith Salon in Venice.  Her sisters helped her get dressed and I took a beautiful bridal portrait before we all headed to the ceremony.

Kevin waited anxiously as her dad walked her down the aisle.  Her brother was the perfect officiant because he knew them so well. The said their vows surrounded by family and friends and in a matter of minutes, they were husband and wife.

Boca Grande Wedding Celebration with Lexie and Christian Destination weddings are more than a one-day celebration and Lexie and Christian's dream wedding on Boca Grande was a full weekend of fun.  They planned every detail of their wedding for a year and it was important to them to have photos and memories of it all.

I had the honor of spending the day before the wedding with them.  Lexie was having her Bridal Luncheon at The Gasparilla Inn Beach Club.  I met her there as they were finishing getting the tables ready.  I captured some lovely photos of her and her mother before all of her bridesmaids started to arrive.

Personalized beach towels, butterfly cupcakes, and beautiful flowers set the atmosphere for the day.  As they sipped on fun drinks and ordered lunch, each girl told stories of how they met Lexie and the impact that she has made in their lives.

A few hours later I was back to meet up with them at their wedding rehearsal.  Lexie and Christian surprised everyone by teaching them a coordinated dance that they planned to perform at the wedding.  It was fun to capture some candid moments of everyone learning the routine.

Then it was off to for a few fun photos.  Lexie knew that their wedding day was going to be busy and there were photos she wanted that she knew they wouldn't have time to capture the next day.  Since they were dressed up (but not in her wedding dress), these photos will hang in their home for years without necessarily being "wedding photos".

Englewood Beach Wedding with Al and Tracy Al and Tracy are from New Jersey and started planning their wedding there a couple of years ago.  Unfortunately, health issues and taking care of family became their priority so their wedding plans kept getting changed.  Al called a couple of months ago and said that they were trying to put together a small wedding while they were going to be down in Englewood for a couple of months.

The team at The Waverly helped coordinate their beach wedding.  On a Wednesday afternoon it all came together.  Friends and family traveled from all over to celebrate with them.

Tracy dressed up her wedding dress with a cowboy hat and cowboy boots.  Al wore a tuxedo and even dressed their two dogs up as a bride and groom.

The Waverly set up their arch, flowers and chairs and the guests gathered an hour before sunset for the ceremony.

The sun created a beautiful glow over their ceremony and after a sand ceremony, exchanging rings and vows, they are finally husband and wife!

Having their dogs with them was the icing on the cake so immediately after the ceremony we included them in their photos.

After sunset everyone walked across the street to The Waverly for dinner and cake.  Al wanted to make sure that we got a picture of their special cake topper because he chose it just for them.

Congratulations to Al and Tracy who I know will have a wonderful journey together.

Boca Grande Engagement Session with Ashley and Sheila Ashley and Sheila met a couple of years ago at the Venice dog park.  They started talking after the dogs began playing together and started dating soon after.

Now they are planning their fall wedding at the Manasota Beach Club on Manasota Key, Florida.  They wanted engagement photos for their announcements so we decided to photograph on Boca Grande.  The dogs are a big part of their life so of course we had to include them in some of their pictures.

We started on Banyan Street with some casual but fun photos of everyone.  Through a bit of bribery with treats and their good training, the dogs cooperated and behaved as well as we could have hoped.

After behaving for several minutes, the dogs (and humans) needed a break.  The dogs happily sat aside as we captured some images of Ashley and Sheila.

Next it was down to the beach for sunset.  After an outfit change, they were ready for some fun beach pictures.

Sheila really wanted to climb on the rocks, so they carefully headed out. The light was going fast so we captured a few final images.

Now that their engagement photos are done, the wedding dresses chosen, the venue secured and the guest list narrowed down, they are looking forward to not only their wedding but the rest of their lives together.

La Playa Beach and Golf Resort Wedding Reception with Andrea and Brian Like many couples, Andrea and Brian had planned their dream wedding for 2020.  Because of COVID they scaled back their wedding and had a small ceremony a year ago and started planning a party at their favorite resort, La Playa Beach and Golf Resort in Naples, Florida.

On their one year anniversary, they finally celebrated with family and friends.  Andrea bought a new dress and the focus of this day was on taking family pictures of everyone together and capturing candid moments at the reception.

It was a beautiful day and Andrea had her best girlfriends around as she got ready for her party.

After an hour taking family photos on the beach, they enjoyed Happy Hour with their friends and Brian gave a heartfelt toast.

To everyone's delight, we got a beautiful sunset so we walked back down to the beach to capture some more photos.

We then walked over to the Bayview Ballroom for a night of food, festivities and dancing.  They shared a First Dance together and kept the rest of the night informal, just enjoying their time with guests.

Brian wanted to make sure that we got a photo of him with his college friends so when I found them all out on the patio enjoying drinks and cigars, I knew this would be a great way for him to remember them.

As we wrapped up our night, they treated me to one final dance alone.

One year of marriage down, a lifetime of love together to go!  Congratulations Andrea and Brian.

Sarasota Wedding with Cristina and Kurt I met Cristina and Kurt in the spring as they started planning their wedding.  They've been together for more than seven years and feel like they are already married, but it was time to make it official.  We had a great engagement session over the summer, and they used some of those photos for their wedding announcements.

They had an ambitious plan for their wedding day.  Cristina got ready at Hotel Indigo in downtown Sarasota.  Her sister and daughter helped her with every detail.  Since Cristina is several inches shorter than Kurt, she wore fabulous high heeled shoes!

They knew they wanted to get married at St. Patrick's Catholic Cathedral in Sarasota where they attend church every week.   They had a traditional ceremony with readings from their children, exchanged vows and shared communion.

We took all of their family formals in the church and then everyone headed to Bonita Beach to the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort.  They wanted to have their reception at a venue that everyone could enjoy and spend the weekend celebrating together.  This resort has a beautiful foyer and pool area where we took some additional pictures of them together before joining everyone at the reception.

They wanted to have as traditional a wedding as possible so Kurt tossed her garter and Cristina threw her bouquet to all the single ladies.

It was a great day and everyone had a wonderful time.  Now they not only "feel" like husband and wife, they officially are!  Congratulations Cristina and Kurt.

Blind Pass Beach Engagement Session with Colleen and Jason Although Colleen and Jason are from Massachusetts, they are planning a Florida wedding and wanted their engagement photos on the beach.  Colleen had a few ideas for the types of photos she was hoping for and trusted my vision for creating something unique and special, just for them.

The day we met at Blind Pass Beach was windy and cloudy but in the end, both of these elements helped us create some fantastic photos.

We started in one of my favorite areas, the mangrove boardwalk, to capture some images of them together without worrying about the wind.

Then we walked across to the beach and realized that the clouds had created sunbeams coming down.  Excited for this unique photo opportunity, we took full advantage of it with a variety of fun photos.

Then we went over to my favorite tree tunnel for some fun dancing silhouette photos.

After a quick outfit change, we walked down to the water for another fun series of photos that were Colleen and Jason's idea-a champagne celebration.

Luckily they brought two bottles of champagne so we had two opportunities to capture the perfect shots.

Then we finished the session with some classic photos of them together.

As Colleen and Jason plan their fall 2022 wedding here in Florida, they have great photos and memories to share with family and friends.

Englewood Beach Wedding with Andy and Beth Andy and Beth met thirteen years ago while Beth was on a date with Andy's friend.  It didn't take long for sparks to fly between these two and they've been together ever since.  It took more than 10 years for Andy to propose, but he nailed a surprise engagement by popping the question on his own birthday.

There was no doubt she'd say yes and from Michigan, they started planning their Florida wedding.  Beth has been coming to Englewood for years since her grandparents live in town and they decided Manasota Key would be the perfect beach destination wedding. About 40 family and friends made the trip to Florida to celebrate with them during the first part of December.

Beth and her sisters got ready at a condo on the beach and Ashley from Give Me Glam did the makeup for the day.

Beth and Andy decided a few weeks before the wedding that they wanted to do a "First Look" so that they could have some time alone before the ceremony.  We decided that Blind Pass Beach provided a beautiful backdrop for their time together and gave us an opportunity to capture some different looks for their wedding day photography.

Then it was time to go back to Englewood Beach and officially get married.  The group was seated and listening to beautiful music by Matt Dendy at SRQ Violinist.  Ann's Flowers provided the bouquets and arrangements for the ceremony and reception.

Beth was walked down the aisle by her father. Grace Felice with A Wedding With Grace officiated the ceremony.  Through laughter and a few tears, they exchanged rings and said "I Do".

After the family pictures, we had plenty of time capture intimate photos of just them.  Sunset pictures were important to Beth and Englewood Beach didn't disappoint.

When the last of the color was gone, we walked across the street to The Waverly and the party was just getting started.  All Event Entertainment provided the music for the evening and kept the dance floor rocking.

Then it was time to cut the cake and enjoy the rest of the night.  Although Beth told me several times that the day was flying by, I know that they'll never forget this wonderful day.

Take a minute to check out their Wedding Album Slideshow to see more great pictures from their day.

Palm Island Family Photo Session For the Zintl family, Palm Island is their favorite family vacation getaway.  Ann and Will used to own a home on this little island but sold it a few years ago because they wanted to spend more time with their children and grandchildren.  Now, once a year, the whole family comes to Palm Island Resort for a week of sun, fun and relaxation.

Taking a well-deserved break from Minnesota in October, this time together gives the whole family something to look forward to.

I first met them in 2019 and we had a great family photo session taking advantage of the golf carts and cruising all over the resort. They coordinated in blue and white and we got lots of fun group pictures.

Although they didn't travel in 2020, they couldn't wait for their next vacation together and Ashley called me as soon as they had their week confirmed.  Mike and I met them the day after they arrived on the island and had another great session.  The kids hadn't changed too much in the past two years but they do have a new (adorable) addition to the family.

This year they decided to keep their palette neutral in whites and creams.  No matter what this family wears, they always look great.

Here are some of the other fun photos we took around the resort.

And of course I couldn't resist taking a sunset silhouette of this fun bunch.

Palm Island Resort Wedding with Stephanie and Arnold I met Stephanie and Arnold a year ago when they started planning their wedding on Palm Island.  Stephanie and Arnold are high school sweethearts and have spent the last few years building a life together.  Arnold proposed a couple of years ago and now it was time that everything came together.

They flew in from New Jersey on Thursday and got settled into the Palm Island Resort for their weekend celebration.  They had perfect weather weekend with sunny skies and pleasant temperatures.

I met the men at their condo as they were starting to get ready and laughed as they watched videos on how to tie a Double Windsor Knot.  Finding and folding their pocket squares was another challenge but these guys were up for it.  Then it was time to get dressed and get some group pictures.

Next it was over to the bridal suite where Stephanie and her bridesmaids were finishing up hair and makeup by LA Bride Studio.  We took a few fun pictures of the ladies in their matching robes then it was time to get dressed and ready to walk down the aisle.

Everyone gathered on the beach and anxiously waited Stephanie's arrival.  Finally the van arrived and the music started.  The look on Arnold's face when he saw her for the first time was of pure joy!  Stephanie was walked down the aisle by her father and the whole family was present to witness their vows.

Lhegend of Lhegendary Weddings officiated the ceremony and beautifully told the story of how these two came together.  Stephanie and Arnold poured sand and exchanged rings and vows to bind their lives together.

They smiled through all of the family photos and had a few minutes together on the beach before heading to the reception area to start the party.

The receptions at Palm Island Resort was under the tent and DJ Alex at Curate Entertainment kept the dance floor hopping. Sheryl at To Honor You Weddings and Special Events did a great job of coordinating the whole day and decorating the entire event.  Her team set up the arch, arranged all the flowers, decorated the reception area, lighted the dock and kept everyone on schedule the entire day.

Stephanie threw her bouquet and Arnold definitely had fun removing her garter and tossing it to the single men!

They cut their cake, made by Lady Cakes and served cupcakes to the guests.  Personalized cookies were an added touch and enjoyed by all.

We ended their day with some photos on the dock and then they were back to dancing with their guests.  It was a full and wonderful day that they'll always remember.

Couples Session on Manasota Key with Mindy and Stu Mindy called in June because she was planning a September trip to Manasota Key and wanted some photos with Stu.  Mindy was excited about their session because she wanted to redecorate her home with photos of them.  Stu agreed to the session as long as I kept it short and painless.

I met Mindy at their condo the day before so we could talk about which locations we wanted to shoot at.  We decided to keep it easy by photographing along the intercoastal waterway across from their condo and on the beach just outside their room.

We met again the next evening, about an hour before sunset.  We started with some pictures on a dock with some mangroves in the background.

We then walked back over to the beach and spent the rest of our session there taking a variety of different shots.

Despite the abundance of clouds, we didn't get a lot of color at sunset, so we took a few final photos and called it a night.  A few days later Mindy saw her gallery of photos and has chosen some of her favorite images to turn into metal wall art above her fireplace, prints to put around her home, and even a photo album of all of her favorite photos.

Boca Grande Senior and Family Session with Raylee Whitney and her family recently bought a home in Boca Grande and knew it was the right time and place for both a family session and Senior session with their oldest daughter Raylee.

Coming from Indiana, I warned them about Florida summer rain storms but we made a plan and got a bit lucky!

Eager to show off their new home and enjoy the comfort of air conditioning, we started with some family pictures around their house.  Despite the stormy sky in the background, we captured some great images of the whole family together.

Then we loaded up their golf carts and headed into town to focus on Senior pictures for Raylee.  As we moved around town we took advantage of some of the most popular spots on the island and she had fun changing outfits to create different looks.  She had ideas of her own for some images she wanted to capture and they all turned out great.

Two hours flew by and before we knew it, the sun had set.  We captured a wide array of images that the family used to create a photo collage wall and a photo album so that they can enjoy and share all of their images.  We're already talking about their next session and adding more metal prints to their home.

Fashion and Beauty Photo Shoot with Give Me Glam I have to admit I'm always looking at other photographers work.  Sometimes it's to learn a style or technique and it's often a source of inspiration for new things to try.

I LOVE photographing weddings and families but it's important to me to have fun and create my own opportunities for growth.  For several months I wanted to create a beauty session, inspired by great makeup and the color red.  It took a bit of coordination to put together the right team of people for this special shoot, but I was able to make it happen with the artistic talent of Ashley at Give Me Glam and model Bailey Scott.

On a Monday morning we met at Ashley's new studio in Port Charlotte and got started.  We knew we wanted to create different looks using makeup and styling.  I wanted to create images that could be used for the 4th of July and Christmas but we didn't know exactly what that might mean.

Ashley started by creating a "Fresh-Cover Girl" look on Bailey and I used a simple white background and coached her through a variety of fun expressions.

Then Ashley added a graphic eyeshadow and a bold red lip and we tried some photos using different sunglasses loaned to us by Island Optical.

Then I switched over to the red backdrop that I bought specifically for this session.  Bailey put on a red dress that she brought with her and we created more looks.

Although I put together this shoot as a chance to play with different styles and lighting techniques, I was surprised and happy when Venice Lifestyle Magazine chose to publish our photos and share our session with it's subscribers.

Thank you to the whole team that brought this day together!

Gran Paradiso Engagement Session with Cristina and Kurt It's been more than eight years since Cristina and Kurt first met at a restaurant.  Now they have a life together with three beautiful children and a new home in Gran Paradiso, Venice.  They are excitedly planning their November wedding and it was the perfect time for their engagement photo session so they'd have pictures for their wedding announcements.

They both love their new community and the architecture and parks around Gran Paradiso made for a fun backdrop for our shoot.  We got started with some fun shots under the arches and they smiled and laughed as Kurt twirled Cristina around our imaginary dance floor.

Then we headed over to the lake and bridge for a completely different look.

They talked excitedly about their family, the renovations they are undertaking at their new home, and of course, about all of their wedding plans.

Day by day, it's all coming together and their dreams are coming true.

We waited until the sun set and darkness surrounded us, to capture our final set of images for the night.  Surrounded by the lights of the columns, they took another spin around the dance floor.

As always, the night must come to an end.  Cristina told me later that looking at their engagement photos actually made putting their wedding announcement together, FUN.  I can't wait to photograph their wedding in just a couple of months.

CONGRATULATIONS Cristina and Kurt.

Epiphany Church and Venice Yacht Club Wedding with Kim and Brian Kim lived in Naples and Brian lived in Tampa, so when they decided to get married, Venice was the perfect place to meet in the middle.  Not only were they planning a wedding in less than a month but they were still settling into their new home when I first met them.

This was a second marriage and second chance for love for them.

It was important to Brian to be married at Epiphany Cathedral in Venice and they had a beautiful church ceremony.  Reverend Jayabalan Raju performed the ceremony and mass.  Kim's sons walked her down the island and their children read passages from the Bible.

Despite the heat, we went over to the Venice Jetty for family pictures.  The rocks and water are the perfect backdrop for this couple who loves to spend time on the water.

Then it was time for the reception at the Venice Yacht Club.  The beautiful flowers arrangements were created by Floral By Fudgie.

They had cocktail hour in Pearson's Cove Lounge before moving to the Bayside Dining room for dinner and music by the Soul Sensations.

Although the night must come to an end, the joy and love that Kim and Brian share will last a lifetime.

Stump Pass Beach State Park Engagement Session with Jessi and Daniel Jessi has been coming to Englewood for years with her family.  They love the beaches and enjoy boating and fishing.

This year her fiance Daniel came as well and it was the perfect time to have their engagement session.  They are getting married next spring in Orlando so this was their opportunity to have a beach session.  Jessi knew right away that she wanted to shoot at Stump Pass Beach State Park.  Besides just having the beach and water, there are lots of spots with seagrasses, mangroves and trees.

We met an hour before sunset and started our shoot.  We took photos on the boardwalk and found little walk outs to the Intercoastal Waterway.

They enjoyed moments together and their love for each other shined through.

We moved down to the water and captured some photos of them walking and being together.  I made sure to capture some images of the back of Jessi's dress because it's so pretty.

It was a cloudy evening and we didn't get a colorful sunset so we headed back to the sea oats and captured one of our favorite images of the entire session.

The sun had officially set and the park ranger was getting ready to close the gate so it was time to end our session.  They ended up with close to 50 photos that they LOVE and are going to use not only in their wedding announcements but print to decorate their home together.

Antique Car Collection, A Lifetime Passion Project for Dave Living in Englewood Florida I am used to seeing restored antique cars around town.  Not only do these collectors meet every Wednesday morning at Stefano's but they gather the first Saturday of each month on Dearborn Street.  Whether it's seeing 100 cars together or just one here or there as I'm out running errands, it always adds a smile to my face.

As a photographer, I always thought it would be fun to photograph some of these owners and their cars.  I finally decided it was time to find the right person to photograph and my search led me to Dave Lanning.  His passion for cars started as a young man when he was working for Snap-On-Tools in Wisconsin.  Throughout his life he has owned more than 100 cars and happily showed me around his garage where he is restoring and enjoying more than a dozen different cars.  He knows each car inside and out and loves sharing stories about how he acquired the cars and where he's driven them.  He believes these cars should be driven and enjoys taking long rides with his wife.

He happily agreed to a photo shoot with me and I chose the 1936 Railton Tourer.  Dave told us that there were only 1300 of them made and only two in existence, one of which is in England and his is the only one in the United States.  I could say I chose that car to photograph because it was rare, but in reality I liked that it was a red convertible with great curves.

We met early one morning on the road leading to Snook Haven Restaurant because I thought the tree canopy would be a good place to photograph it without a lot of distracting elements.

We then went back to his house so that we could photograph another car and the old fashioned garage he built.  With restored gas pumps and an old fashioned store, his attention to detail is amazing.

Just for fun and to show off his personality, we took a variety of other photos.

I could have spent all day with Dave and his other cars but it was getting hot and we had other business to take care of.

Although I didn't specifically photograph Dave for Venice Lifestyle Magazine, they decided to run a story on the Venice AACA and Dave and feature many of the fun photos we created that day.

Thank you Dave and all the members of the club that I met on my adventures.  I look forward to seeing them (and their cars) around town.

Blind Pass Beach Wedding in Englewood with Sara and Chad Sara and Chad dated in high school but went their separate ways after graduation. Years later Sara returned to her hometown and they picked up where they left off.  Being together and starting a family was the most important thing and the wedding was just a formality.

From the beginning they knew it would be small, surrounded by just a few family members.  Chad's sister would officiate the ceremony and took lead planning their day.  Sara chose a beachy sundress and walked barefoot in the sand.

It was truly a sunset wedding ceremony on Blind Pass Beach.  The family stood as Sara walked down the aisle and they listened as Desiree made it official.

We took family photos afterwards and they were able to spend a few minutes alone watching their first sunset as a married couple.

They spent their honeymoon in Englewood before heading back home to Illinois to continue their lives together.

Congratulations on finally finding your happy ending.

Lido Beach Resort Wedding with Jennifer and Brian It's not easy planning a wedding when you live 1300 miles away but they did it!

Jennifer and Brian are from Massachusetts but wanted to get married on Lido Key, Florida.  Brian's family has a condo on the beach and it was the perfect place for their small wedding.  They started planning almost a year ago but it took several trips to Florida and a few revisions to their original idea to make their wedding dreams come true.

They decided to get married at Lido Beach Resort and have their reception in the Royal Palm Ballroom.  Swanky Soiree provided Day Of Coordination and made sure that everything ran perfectly and on schedule.

Jennifer and her bridesmaids got ready in the Mangrove Room while Brian and his groomsmen got ready at his condo next door.  Jennifer chose her gown from her local bridal store, Chantilly Place Bridal Boutique in North Chelmsford, Massachusetts.  Her hair and makeup was done by Beauty by Krista. She was able to enjoy getting ready with her bridesmaids, mother in law and daughter in their private suite.

They knew from the beginning that they wanted to do a First Look.  They wanted time to be together and really connect, before they said their vows. Brian came over to the hotel and went down to the beach to wait for Jennifer.  Their wedding party watched from the balcony as Brian and Jennifer saw each other for the first time and shared special moments and time together.

They took a few minutes to cool off inside the hotel before getting into position for the wedding.  Family and friends enjoyed the beach on this sunny June afternoon.  Oneco Florist provided the beautiful flowers for the day.

Now it was time for family photos and some fun with the bridal party!  The ladies couldn't resist cooling off a little in the Gulf.

Since the sun wasn't going to set for another couple of hours it was time to head inside for cocktail hour, their grand entrance, and dinner.  DJ Alex with Complete Weddings and Events provided the music for the night.  Their three layer beach themed cake was created by Cakes by Ron in Sarasota.

Brian and Jennifer snuck back down to the beach for sunset and a few more pictures alone.  The cloudy skies prevented a colorful sunset but they still enjoyed the time together and had their first dance as husband and wife on the beach!

Then it was back inside for dinner, dancing and cutting their cake.  The DJ kept the party and dancing going late into the evening.

The best part about a destination wedding is being able to enjoy the honeymoon right away.  So after a few more days relaxing at the beach and spending time with family, it was time to head home and settle into their new lives together.  Congratulations Jennifer and Brian on your special day.

Blind Pass Beach Anniversary Session with Kristi and Randall Kristi called me in the spring to arrange an anniversary photoshoot with her husband.  They have been married for 40 years and haven't had professional pictures taken since their wedding.

Kristi had a specific request for silhouette images.  She had seen some silhouette pictures on my website and envisioned something like that for her own home.  I told her I would happily take a variety of those types of images but that I also wanted to get some photos where she could see their faces.  She thought that was a good idea and we set up our day and time.

We met at Blind Pass Beach about 75 minutes before sunset.  We started with some pictures in the mangroves and on the boardwalk and they started getting comfortable in front of the camera.  I took a variety of natural and posed pictures as they relaxed and started having fun.

As the sun got lower in the sky we were able to move onto the beach.  We started with some walking photos and their niece joined them for a few pictures.

I then had them relax on the beach together and continued to take pictures through sunset.

A week later they were back home in Montana and LOVED the images I captured.  To Kristi's surprise, her FAVORITE  photo was them relaxing on the beach.  Granted her second favorite is the sunset silhouette above but I knew that would happen.  We worked together to design the layout of the metal art I created for her home and she happily sent me these pictures a few days later after it arrived and they hung it in their home.

There's nothing better than decorating your home with personalized images you love and will have forever.

Boca Grande Wedding with Holly and Andrew Holly and Andrew got married in Illinois but had their honeymoon planned on Boca Grande.  They left their five children home while they enjoyed a week at their condo on the island.

Although they had their wedding day photographed, Holly wanted wedding photos on the beach here in Florida.  She brought her dress with her and spent the afternoon having her hair and makeup done.  The typical 5 o'clock summer storm barely slowed us down as we went down to the beach and headed into town for some fun photos.

As we headed into town, Andrew requested that we stop at the Boca Grande Fire Station.  He explained that their family had taken photos on a fire truck back home and he hoped they could take a few here with the trucks.  Luckily for us the doors were open and the Fire Chief happily gave us permission to photograph wherever we wanted.

A photoshoot on Gasparilla Island wouldn't be complete without a walk down Banyan Street.

The June heat and humidity was in full force but Holly requested one last stop at the Historic Lighthouse.

By the end of the week they were back home with their family and had memories of their wedding day and their bonus wedding photoshoot.  I can't wait to see them again when they bring their whole family back for another vacation.

Dramatic Maternity Photo Session at Lemon Bay Park with Bonnie When Bonnie reached out to me about a maternity session and her first question was, "You work with lights at night, right?" I knew it was going to be interesting.  As a former professional photographer herself, she knew exactly what types of images she wanted to memorialize this special time in her life.  This wasn't going to be the usual light and airy beach photo session with the loving husband standing next to her.  "Simple elegance with a dramatic twist" she said.  This was going to be DRAMATIC, in a FOREST, channeling the Angels and a Sense of Blessings because she's been waiting 18 years for this baby boy.

As the photographer, it was both inspiring and slightly scary being asked to create and capture her dream images.  We had one chance to get it right and the planning started a month before our session.

Bonnie researched and bought the gown she wanted for her session.  She picked the perfect color of Periwinkle to compliment her light skin tone and we knew it would photograph well.  The long split tail chiffon train was meant to be thrown into the air for creative photos.  She had her hair professionally curled and makeup done.

In order for me to pull this off, I knew we needed some additional help.  Mike always helps with my lighting but we got two additional assistants whose main purpose would be to throw the train.  I packed four lights, two camera with two different lenses, a tripod and trigger, headlamps and flashlights for after dark, a stool for Bonnie to rest on, a monopod and light stand, an umbrella to soften the light source, and bottles of water for everyone to drink.  The only thing I forgot was bug spray!

Lemon Bay Park provided the perfect environment for our shoot.  It is the right combination of Old Florida forest, nature trails and very few people walking around this time of year.  Bonnie and I scouted the park a couple of weeks before the session so we knew exactly where we wanted to photograph.  We started at our first location about an hour before sunset and practiced throwing the train and starting capturing some images.

We then moved further into the woods along a path surrounded by trees.  We wanted to create a feeling of being surrounded by nature.  As the sun went down, we embraced the dark and switched into an after dark mindset.

As the night progressed, we moved back to our original location but faced a different direction so that we could capture a completely different set of images.

Our photoshoot was a complete success.  Bonnie loves her images and we all had a great time.

Because this was such a unique session, I want to share some Behind The Scenes photos of us pulling this off.  People often believe it's the magic of Photoshop used to create great images, but I believe that if you can get it right in the camera, that's when the real magic happens.  So here are some of the Before and After images.  The magic in these photos was simply removing the girls who were throwing the train when necessary, and removing the light and direction of light when needed.  As we say in the photo world, SOOC-Straight out of Camera  vs. Finished photo.

This session was the perfect example of my motto: "DREAM BIG, REMEMBER FOREVER".  Bonnie dreamed big and we'll definitely remember this forever!

Boca Grande Family Photo Session with Tim and Kilee I first met Tim, Kilee and the girls in January of 2020.  Although they live in Indiana, Kilee grew up coming to Florida to visit her grandparents.  Boca Grande is a full of special memories for her and they got married on Banyan Street seven years ago.

Last year we had a blast with the girls despite the cool and windy weather.  It was short notice when Tim called me this time because they were only in town for a couple of days and there was a storm front passing over the state.  They realized how fast the girls were growing up and wanted to have new pictures of the family so we looked at the weather and knew we had one day to get it done.  Speaking with Kilee, we talked about whether we wanted to photograph in the same spots as before or explore new places.  We decided that we'd start at the chapel (which we hadn't photographed at before), then move onto Banyan Street and the beach.  I suggested that if we were going to use the same locations, let's actually try to take similar pictures so that they could see how much the girls changed in 16 months.  She loved the idea and the plan was set.

Although the sun was still a bit high while at the chapel, we captured some great images of the family.  I LOVED the girls hot pink dresses and how it popped against the white church.

Then we moved onto Banyan Street where we took some similar poses to last year.  I thought it would be fun to show how the family has changed.

Then we moved down to the beach.  Although we had a breeze this year, it was nicer and definitely warmer than last year.  Last year the girls hit their limit about 20 minutes before sunset because they had gotten wet while playing in the water.  This year, they didn't want the shoot to end so we started using our light to keep it going!

(funny that she wouldn't look at me for this picture)

It is a special feeling to have a family love their photos so much that they chose me to do it again.  We've already talked about continuing to do a session every year as the girls grow up so that we can capture their growth and personalities as they change.

Thank you Tim and Kilee.  I love your family and I'll someday be able to say that I was to first to capture model Adlee before she was famous!

Plantation Golf and Country Club Wedding with Lucy and Frank Frank and Lucy hit it off from the moment they met and after dating for a couple of years, Frank asked Lucy to marry him.  From the beginning, Lucy knew exactly what she wanted her wedding to be...formal, elegant, classic and glamorous.  They toured a lot of different venues but fell in love with Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice as soon as they saw it.  With COVID closing everything down last year, they decided to plan for a February 2021 wedding.

Lucy told me early on that the two most important things about their wedding was they wanted great food and great photography.  I was honored she chose me to capture their special day.  We stayed in touch throughout the year, sharing ideas back and forth, and when we met in December to walk around the property together, we came up with a photography plan for the day.

Before we knew it, the wedding day was here.  We got to the club early to photograph the reception area, making sure to capture the centerpieces and homemade limoncello bottles that their mom's had spent a year making.  Lucy had unique touches like her wedding bouquet was created from her mother's brooches and the groomsmen wore brooches instead of boutonnieres.  Lucy and Frank exchanged love notes before the wedding and although they didn't want to see each other before the ceremony, they shared a moment together.

Vibrant Hues Events finished up the outdoor decorations and kept everyone on schedule throughout the day.

Jesse Lee Hair Artistry created a glamourous updo for Lucy.  After her makeup was finished she put on her sparkling dress and earrings and was ready to walk down the aisle with her father.

Surrounded by 50 friends and family, they exchanged personal vows and said I DO.

After family pictures we took a few minutes to go outside and get more photos of them alone.  The trees and golf course provided a beautiful background for their couple's photos.

Since it was important to them to make their cocktail hour, we headed back indoors for them to enjoy their food and friends.  A four course dinner including filet and lobster was enjoyed by all.  After toasts, cake cutting and dances, we headed back outside for a few final photos in the entryway of the Club.

It was an unforgettable day for Lucy and Frank and I know their lives will be filled with love and laughter.

Blind Pass Beach Maternity Photo Session with Molly and Jake Cassie called me because her son Jake and his wife Molly were coming to visit and hoped to get maternity pictures taken while they were here.  The family is from Michigan but with strict COVID restrictions in place in Michigan, they were unable to find a photographer.  Molly and Jake drove down and took a few days to relax and enjoy the warmer weather before our session.  At seven months pregnant, Molly still felt great and had a beautiful pregnancy glow.

I was happy to be able to meet with them the day before our shoot.  We were able to discuss what they really wanted to get out of the session.  Although they wanted photos on the beach, it was also important to take some photos with trees because they wanted their artwork to fit into their northern home.

Although the family has been coming to Englewood for years, they had never stopped at Blind Pass Beach and didn't know about the boardwalk that is by the parking lot.  After our initial meeting, they went to the beach for sunset and we all agreed that it was a great spot.

The next evening we met a couple of hours before sunset.  We spent about an hour in the trees getting a variety of photos with that woodsy feel.  We then moved onto the beach itself and spent another hour walking, posing and having a great time.

Even better, Cassie brought her two other daughters and we were able to get some photos of the sisters together and the family together.  I love being able to include as many family members as possible and we took every possible combination of people we could.

We ended the evening with a beautiful sunset and some great silhouette pictures.

Back home they picked out their favorite photos and we decided that canvases for their walls and a family album would be perfect.  I had it all designed and delivered in just a couple of weeks, in time to show off at her baby shower.

Venice Train Depot Photoshoot with The Monsoons I'd like to say that I've heard Sarasota's hot new music group The Monsoons play but with COVID, I've stayed away from crowds for the past year.  So why I am blogging about them?  Because I really just want to show off some of the fun pictures I took with this great group of guys when I was asked to photograph them for a feature in Venice Lifestyle Magazine.

What I learned is that Pat McDonald spent years touring with the Charlie Daniels Band.  Steve Junot spent time playing on Bourbon Street before touring internationally with a zydeco band and also toured solo.  Chris Guertin has traveled the world as a Musical Director on cruise ships and plays with Kettle of Fish.  Finally these three talented musicians found each other and started a group of their own, The Monsoons.

I started out talking to Chris on the phone about the band and the style of photoshoot they wanted.  He lives in Sarasota and I'm in Englewood so meeting in Venice seemed the logical place.  He was looking to me for advice for our location shoot and after a day of driving around looking for an interesting alley or warehouse district in Venice, I was still a undecided.  I have always liked the Historic Venice Train Depot because of the architectural arches and bright yellow and green color.  He suggested a few photos at Troll Music store.  Since they are on the same block, we decided to take an hour and shoot at both.

When I pulled into the depot, the guys were laughing and talking.  I showed them some sample pictures of music groups that I had found online to see what they liked and what they didn't.  Pat immediately told me he liked the more natural, less posed pictures.  After I explained to him that even "natural" pictures were slightly staged, he was onboard.  Chris had two firm train tracks or brick walls because they were clique and overdone.  Got it, let's go.

Since it was 30 minutes before sunset, we went to the west side of the Depot which was lit by the late afternoon sun.  We started with some walking shots where I simply let the guys be themselves and laugh and talk.  I loved the side light that was hitting them as they walked through the arches and when I showed them how good they looked (on the back of the camera), they were happily surprised and I knew I had them on my side for the rest of the session.

Trying for a variety of looks, we found a couple of interesting spots on the outside of the depot.

Next I took individual photos of the guys.  Several months ago I saw this arch and knew I would take a picture with someone in it someday.  Pat was willing to chill here.

Next was Steve.  I loved the repetition of the arches and park benches and thought the lighted sign behind him gave us a great pop of color.  We waited for the perfect moment when the people waiting at the depot were out of the shot, and Steve gave me this laugh and smile.  I LOVE how natural it is and I feel like it sums up his personality in this moment in time.

Finally it was Chris's turn.  I liked a couple different spots for him and his smile and happy attitude came through.

As I was driving to the Depot, I noticed this gray building and more importantly, this green door. Although I've been to the Depot numerous times, it wasn't until I was thinking about photo spots that this jumped out at me.

We walked over to it and I confirmed that all of their tetanus shots were up to date.  The platform is rickety and old but they carefully jumped up and got comfortable.  I moved away to let them goof around and got these "natural" photos!

Then it was back to the depot and time to pull out their guitars.

So there we a train depot, standing right next to train tracks!  We've been laughing and taking photos for 30 minutes so of course Steve walks over and imitates the classic walking away shot.  I quickly grabbed one frame before he moved away and Chris said, "NO, This is how you do it".  So of course I took a photo!

Finally it was 6 pm and Troll music had closed their doors.  They had kindly given us permission to come in after hours so we wanted to be efficient and thankful to them.  We headed down the street and spent a few minutes in there capturing some great images.  Since I have no musical talent, I had never been in there before but I highly recommend it to anyone looking for music, instruments or lessons.  They were extremely nice despite it being the busy Christmas season.

It was time for our session to wrap up, the store to close and the guys to go home to their families.  I promised that I will catch a show, when I'm comfortable being back around crowds.  In the meantime these three continue to perform several times a month at different venues around Venice and Sarasota.

I meant it when I told them that they have been one of my favorite photo assignments for the magazine.  Three photogenic guys who love to laugh and put their faith in me to capture some fun images, made for a really fun shoot.

To end this story, as a joke I emailed the editor the picture of Chris on the train tracks and suggested he tell Chris he wanted to use it on the cover.  To my surprise, he DID want to use it on the cover and Chris shockingly gave permission.  So if you're wondering why the photo with Steve has construction cones and the one with Chris doesn't, that's the reason why (plus you were paying attention so good for you!).  Knowing it was being considered as the cover, I cleaned up the image.  In the end, the magazine decided to go with a different photo of mine that fit the Valentine's Day theme of this February issue.  But I still love how the story and spread turned out.

Boca Grande Senior Session with AJ When AJ reached out around Thanksgiving about having his Senior Pictures taken at the beach, I thought it was a great idea.  Soon I was talking to his mom Tina, and felt like I was talking to an old friend.  Although they live in Missouri, they vacation often at her dad's home in Placida.  The whole family loves fishing, boating and the beach.

They knew they were going to come down to spend Christmas in Florida so we decided that a couple days after Christmas would be a great day for their session.  Although this was going to be AJ's Senior Session, Tina loved the idea of taking some photos of the whole family together.  Like many families, they hadn't had professional pictures taken since the kids were little.

We agreed that I'd start at their house and we could take some photos there.  We found several places in their yard for the family to gather.

AJ asked if I'd take his picture on the paddleboard and of course I would.  Although I was a tad nervous that he might fall in, he was a pro and we got this photo.

Then Tina and AJ came with us to Boca Grande.  AJ loved the Banyan trees on Banyan street and l wasn't surprised when he asked if he could have some pictures taken in the tree.  He successfully climbed up and we got some fun shots.

Next it was down to the beach for golden hour photos.  He posed and smiled and had a few ideas for pictures that he wanted.  It was a beautiful sunset and a fun afternoon with this family.

AJ will finish up his senior year and has already been admitted to the University of Missouri where he plans to study Nursing.  His love of Florida and the water will always bring him back to his second home down here.

Venice Florida Wedding with Jenny and Daniel Jenny and Daniel got engaged over a year ago and were in the middle of planning their large wedding last summer when COVID shut everything down.  It took months of looking to find the perfect outdoor venue for their smaller, family oriented wedding.  They finally found Maxine Barritt Park, by Sharky's On The Pier.  The gazebo was plenty big to allow for social distancing and was a great outdoor location.

The family spent the day stringing lights, wrapping the pillars and decorating the picnic tables.  Jenny's love of sunflowers became the underlying theme for the wedding.

They planned for a 4 p.m. ceremony and everyone was on hand a half hour before.  Daniel's mom worked hard preparing the food, laying the rose petals down and making sure everything was perfect.  Finally it was time to put on the boutonnieres and get in place.

Jenny was walked down the aisle by her father who proudly gave her away.

After they exchanged their own written vows and put the rings on each other's fingers, they were pronounced husband and wife.

This fun couple wanted some wedding pictures on the swing before we moved to the beach for more family and group photos.

The cold front that had come in made for a chilly bride, but she smiled like a champion and we got some beautiful, natural pictures.

Then it was back to the pavilion for dinner, toasts, dancing and cake cutting.  We ended the night with a couple of night photos and they were off to Sarasota for a weekend honeymoon.

Manasota Beach Family Session with David and Jane Jane's birthday was fast approaching and what she really wanted was a family photo session.  Although this sounds like a simple request, it meant that they had to fly the children into Florida on a weekend that would work for everyone.

David reached out to me and we found a weekend that would work.  It had been more than ten years since they'd had professional photos taken together and the children were no longer young kids.

We met at Manasota Beach on a holiday weekend.  The beach was crowded but we found our small slice of sand to use to make it appear like we were the only people there.  The wind blew and kids splashed in the water but we had a great night.

Even with this small family, two hours went fast.  We created a lot of different looks and shot every family combination we could think of.

Now they have their favorite photos proudly displayed in their house.

Engagement Session at Venice Fishing Pier with Dawn and Troy The New Year started off on a high note as I got to meet and photograph Dawn and Troy.  They met years ago while they were each vacationing in the Bahamas and it turned out they lived only a couple of hours away from each other.  Troy proposed on Indian Rocks Beach several months ago and they wanted to have their engagement pictures taken at a beach.

They had flown in on New Year's Eve from Minnesota and were enjoying a weekend get away in Englewood.  After a day at Manasota Beach enjoying the sand and sun they were ready for their engagement session.

We all met at the Venice Fishing Pier an hour after sunrise to take advantage of the early morning light.  The slight fog had already started to lift and we were left with gorgeous morning light.

I have rarely met a couple who moved together as well as they did.  They laughed and danced with little instruction.  One hour quickly turned into two as we kept finding different locations to shoot at.  We walked along the beach and they posed under the pier.  We then walked on the pier and tried to get the birds to join our photoshoot.  Afterwards we moved up to the palm trees and boardwalk and even ended our session taking pictures in the parking lot at Sharky's.

As they put the finishing touches on their May wedding back home, they will always have amazing memories and photos of their time together here in Florida.

I love couples to start with simple walking photos.  It breaks the ice, gives them space to be themselves, and we usually get some fun, casual photos out of it.

One advantage of being at the beach at 9 a.m. (even on Saturday morning) was that there were surprisingly few people there.  The other advantage was that although the sun was getting brighter, it was fun to work with it, creating shadows as well as bright spots.

You can't come to the beach and not get in!  After an hour of walking on the beach, we decided it was time to take some water shots.

Only a handful of people were on the end of the pier fishing which gave us plenty of room to take fun photos.  We kept trying to get the birds to play with us but they weren't interested.

A few more shots sitting quietly on the beach and some fun ones with the grasses and palm trees.  These two never ran out of smiles or poses.

And finally Dawn was the perfect model for a photo that I had been wanting to try at Sharky's using the bright pink building.  Her fun personality fit what I was looking for...a little different type of photo.

Venice Lifestyle Magazine I met Charmaine in the fall of 2019 at Sassy Sister's, an organization made up of woman business owners who enjoy friendship as well as helping to promote each other's businesses.  When I heard that Charmaine was the publisher of Venice Lifestyle Magazine, I wanted her to know that there was a photographer in the group and I'd love the opportunity to work with her and the magazine.

A few months later she called me and asked if I would photograph the Sassy Sisters meeting because she was running a story on them.  Since I was going to be there anyways, it was an easy assignment.  The pictures ran with the story and she called again the next month asking if I could take on another shoot.

I was honored when they wanted to feature ME in their July issue and use one of my wedding couples, Steve and Annie, on the cover.  Knowing that they had only featured a person on the cover once before, it was an honor that they liked my photograph enough to run it.  Steve and Annie were excited as well and I had fun getting them copies of the magazine so they could share it with their entire family.

As 2020 continued, Charmaine and the magazine's writer Tony, kept on calling.  Month after month they have asked me to photograph all sorts of people and businesses.  They know that I specialize in photographing people, but I have had the pleasure of stretching my skills to photograph other subjects like food, lingerie, and beauty products.

So far, they have used twenty of my photographs on the covers of their magazines.  I have written an article for the magazine and given Tony subject ideas.  I have met new people and learned about a lot of businesses that I never knew existed in Venice.

As the magazine continues to grow, I look forward to continuing to work with this amazing team.

I met Dan and Jackie O'Dowd when I photographed their daughter's bridal brunch and rehearsal dinner.  A few weeks later I had a great time photographing Dan and Jackie for their feature about his career and their new business WIN Reality.  Jackie provided the photos of the family when they were younger and Dan at the MLB Network.

The May issue is all about Women and I loved photographing Pam Hilse and Danielle Neri for their feature stories.  I've known Pam from the Venice Yacht Club for a couple of years so this was a great excuse for a family photo shoot.  I had fun photographing Danielle at Apex Training Center where she teaches kickboxing.

For April I photographed the Clydesdale Horses and Cool Today Stadium.  Mike and I also went on Logan River Tours scenic tour on the Myakka River.  It was fun to get out and about for the magazine.

The magazine was planning on featuring Ken Anderson and we discussed the type of photo I was going to take.  We decided on a nice portrait at my indoor studio.  When Ken showed up for his shoot on his Harley-Davidson, just a few minutes before sunset, we grabbed our lights and headed down to the end of my block.  In just a few minutes we captured some great images of him with his bike.  Then we went back to the studio to capture his portrait.  Honestly, he couldn't take a bad picture.  Fortunately, the magazine was as excited about his motorcycle pictures as I was and used this one for the cover of the February 2022 issue.

The January issue is all about Health and Fitness and Wendy Rose, Deb Peters and the residents of Village on the Island were featured in this issue.

The December issue is about planning parties and celebrating family.  This photograph of Karla's Lemoncilla made the cover of the magazine and tasted delicious!

The November issue is all about Celebrating local businesses and additions to our community.  I covered Wellen Park's Ground Breaking ceremony and was blown away by the plans for this new community.  It will completely change South Venice.

October's issue is all about food and features several local restaurants.  BrewzaBagels, Allegro Bistro, Boca Royale and Venice Yacht Club were all featured in this issue.

I am excited that a personal photo session I did for "FUN" was chosen to be in the magazine.  Makeup artist Ashley Robinson at Give Me Glam and model Bailey Scott and I teamed up for a fun day of experimenting with different looks and styles.  In addition, Scoops Ice cream kindly let us come in and have a photo session in their ice cream shop.  We all had a fun time.

For the August issue, I had the pleasure of photographing two families with triplets.  We did one session at a local park and the other family session at Fox Lea Farms.  This young lady rides at the stables and her family enjoys watching her compete.

After a year of talking to Tony on the phone, he asked if I could come photograph his wife Emily for the July issue about growing tomatoes.  Not only was it great to finally meet his family and take fun pictures, they sent me home with a big basket of fresh heirloom tomatoes.

The June issue featured Men and Roger is an avid Golf Shoe Collector.  I also enjoyed photographing Dave Lanning and his antique car collection and am proud that he was featured inside.

This special Mother and her daughter was an image from a family photo session I had just days before the magazine deadline.  Charmaine asked if I had any ideas for the cover and when I saw this frame, we both knew it would be perfect for the issue featuring Women.  Thank you to Kristen and Gabby for being amazing and looking beautiful at 9 am.

I had a fun session with Nancy Scott in her home.  She owns a concierge service and the photos were used inside the magazine to accompany her article.  Charmain decided that this photo was also great for the cover since the issue was about HOME services.

While photographing a wedding on Venice Beach, I captured this cute moment of the kids playing in the rose petals.  I proposed it to Charmaine as an option for the February issue and she loved it.

January 2021 issue featuring my husband, Mike Rogers on the cover.

When Tony asked if I had photographed food before, I hesitantly answered YES.  I went to Allegro Bistro and the Venice Yacht Club and photographed their restaurants, people and food for the October issue.  It was fun photographing the food but it would have been more fun to sample it afterwards

(I didn't get to eat any of it)!

Tony asked me to write an article about photography for the September issue.  I had recently photographed Abby's wedding and included a picture of her in my article about "People Pictures, Tips to Take Better Portraits".  When Tony and Charmaine saw how beautiful she is, they asked to use a different picture of her for the September Cover about Fashion.

The story that really got it started for me was a feature they ran about ME.  They asked me to submit some of my favorite pictures from around Florida.  Over the years I have taken thousands of landscape and people pictures but I narrowed it down to a handful of my favorites.  We were all still in the early stages of mandatory COVID lockdowns but Charmaine was looking for a happy story (since we are always working two months ahead).  She saw my sunset photo of Steve and Annie and asked to use it for the July issue.  We were all honored to be featured.

Boca Grande Engagement Session with Stephanie and Arnold Stephanie and Arnold have known each other since high school.  Although they were a year apart, they went to each others proms and kept in touch as the years passed.  After dating for several years, Arnold surprised Stephanie with a proposal on the beach a year ago.  They are now looking forward to and planning their wedding at the Palm Island Resort next fall.

Stephanie reached out to me to take their engagement pictures for their wedding announcements.  We originally talked about Manasota Beach but when the weather forecast got dreary, we rescheduled for the following weekend.  Since they were driving up from Cape Coral for their pictures, we decided to change our location to Boca Grande.  They had never been there before but trusted my vision that there were lots of different locations to photograph on the island and we ended up having a great time.

Unfortunately Banyan Street was closed down for a wedding and we were escorted away by friendly police officers!  That didn't slow us down as we went over to the chapel, the Gasparilla Inn, the Historic Lighthouse and finally the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse Museum.  We got to know each other during our session and the more we moved around and took pictures, the more comfortable they became in front of the camera and got used to the goofy things I asked them to do.

In the end we got a lot of great pictures and they picked out the perfect picture for their announcements. I'm looking forward to spending more time with them and photographing their wedding next fall!

Fort Myers Wedding at the Marriott Sanibel Harbour Resort and Spa with Tanya and Jeff I met Jeff and Tanya more than a year ago when they flew down from Michigan and wanted to have their engagement photos taken on the beach in Fort Myers.  It was a crazy day for them having flown in the day before and discovered that the air conditioning in their house had gone out.  It was a hot, humid day and by the time we met, they were a bit frazzled.  Nevertheless, we had a fun time photographing around the beaches and got some amazing photographs.

They told me that they were looking forward to getting married in the Dominican Republic in May and although we stayed in touch, I never imagined I would be the one photographing their wedding.  When COVID restrictions went into effect in March and April, they knew their wedding was going to have to be postponed.  It was a long summer for them and Tanya's mom, Sara, who was their wedding coordinator.  They considered getting married in Hawaii, the Florida Keys, or even at home in Michigan.  Sara and I talked several times over the summer and I was happy to offer suggestions because I wanted to do anything I could to help make sure this deserving couple got everything they wanted.

Finally in late October Sara called me one more time and told me Jeff had committed to having a "surprise" wedding for Tanya.  Plans started to get made with a location and date set.  In the end Tanya was told about it but still let Jeff and her mom plan the whole day.  Both moms definitely deserve awards for pulling together every detail to make this the dream wedding for Jeff and Tanya.  And they did it all in just three weeks.

It was a beautiful Saturday in late November when the family and friends finally came together to make it official.  The Marriott Sanibel Harbour Resort and Spa is a beautiful venue.  The ladies were able to be pampered and get ready in their own spa location while the men had a private banquet room in the main building.  Although the beach area is small, it's a lovely location for small wedding parties.

When I arrived Tanya and the ladies were finishing hair and makeup and had plenty of time before getting dressed.  After spending some time with them, I found the groom and his men.  Jeff was anxious to get dressed and ready to get the pictures started.  The men were surprisingly happy to be photographed and we had lots of fun posing and goofing off on the second floor.

Then it was time to get back to the bridal suite and get the ladies into their dresses.  Laughter and love filled the air as Tanya's team got her ready, primped and dressed.

With everyone dressed and ready it was time to get everyone to the ceremony.  Jeff's mom had the honor of putting on all the men's boutonnieres before they made their way down to the beach.

Tanya was walked down the aisle by her mom and dad as Steve Ash from To Honor You Weddings and Special Events, provided the music and microphones for the day.  Tanya was hoping that Jeff would cry when he saw her but instead it was all smiles that came through.

Tanya's brother officiated the wedding and did a great job of making it personal and fun.  Tanya's face said it all as she smiled and laughed all the way through the ceremony.

Then it was hugs and kisses, family photos and private time with the newlyweds!

The reception in the Island Ballroom was perfect.  Tanya and Jeff beamed as they were announced for the very first time.  The evening was filled with toasts, dancing, and a fun shoe game.  This wedding was not the day they first imagined but in the end was even better than they could have dreamed of.

CONGRATULATIONS TO TANYA AND JEFF.  May your lives always be filled with love and laughter.

Family Photo Session in Venice Florida It's been a difficult year for families to get together so when Linda's sons decided to visit, she knew it was time for a family photo session.  With four young grandchildren who are changing everyday, it was important to capture everyone at this stage in their lives.

We took advantage of a local park by her home in Venice and spent more than an hour running around chasing the kids.  In addition to the "posed" family photos, we got a lot of candid photos of the family.  In the end, these natural shots of the family are some of our favorites.

It was a great morning with this family and I know they can't wait until they are back together again.

Englewood Beach Wedding on Manasota Key with Ed and Hannah This wasn't just a small wedding, this was a secret small wedding.

Ed and Hannah (and their families) have known each other for a long time.  They've been sharing their lives together for more than three years and this spring, Ed finally asked Hannah to marry him.  Since he proposed on Manasota Key it seemed right that they get married there.

They flew in from Minnesota to spend a week with friends at the Tamarind Condos on the Key.  These two friends were the only ones who knew and bore witness to the celebration.

Without telling their family or friends back home, they had a simple sunset ceremony.  This was their dream.  They have each other and they knew that was the most important thing.

Although it was small, it was their wedding and important for them to capture this day.  We took pictures through sunset as they smiled and laughed.  They enjoyed the remainder of their trip to Englewood before going home to tell the family.

It's times like these that I'm glad, through photographs, they can share this day with the ones they love.

Boca Grande Wedding at The Gasparilla Inn & Club with Sharon and Don Don and Sharon were living on opposite coasts of Florida when they met a couple of years ago.  But a fateful trip to visit his son on the east coast led to a blind date and they hit if off.  It wasn't long before she moved to Englewood so they could build their lives together.

It was a second marriage for both of them and they wanted a small family wedding.  They invited their children and grandchildren to be part their wedding at The Gasparilla Inn on Boca Grande.  It was a perfect fall morning as the family gathered early at the resort to get dressed.  By 10:25 Sharon was ready to have her son walk her down the aisle.

Don waited anxiously as the family sat down and the music started playing.  Their granddaughter was the flower girl and their grandson was the ring bearer.  They said their vows and shared their joy with the entire family.

Soon it was time for family pictures on the front porch.  It was especially important to them to capture their ENTIRE family together.  Although this was the first time they had all been together, I know it won't be the last.

We went out to the golf course for a little private time and they had their first dance as husband and wife.  He twirled her around the green as he quietly sang, just for her.

They celebrated with brunch in the Banyan room.  Champagne and toasts ended their morning at the Inn but the celebration lasted all day long.

Congratulations to this amazing couple and their entire family.  It was our honor to be able to capture this day for you.

Venice Beach Wedding with Paul and Patricia Paul and Patricia met at church in the spring and felt an instant connection.  Even though stay at home orders were taking effect, they found time to be together and get to know each other.

Just a few months later they committed their love and lives to each other in a small ceremony at Beachcombers on Venice Beach.  Patricia's father walked her down the aisle as Matt Dendy of SRQ Violinist played.  Just before sunset they became man and wife.  We gathered everyone for a large group photo then had fun photographing their family.

Soon it was time to get the celebration started.  They had their first dance under the twinkling lights of the gazebo and enjoyed a delicious dinner provided by Cafe Venice.  Dancing and drinks continued through the evening as everyone shared in their joyous day.

Englewood Beach Wedding on Manasota Key with Abby and Ryan It may not have been love at first site when they met five years ago but it took them less than a month to realize they were perfect for each other.  Seven months later, Abby and Ryan decided to spend their lives together and start a family.  Now it was time to make it official but I could tell that a piece of paper wasn't going to change the love and commitment they had for each other and their two children.

When I met them for the first time in December to talk about the wedding, they knew they wanted it to be relaxed and casual.  The plan was to get married Memorial Day weekend on Englewood Beach.  Their closest friends and family were planning to come and make it a weekend celebration.

What none of us could have planned on was the Coronavirus and the restrictions that were put into place.  As soon as Florida opened the beaches back up and small groups were allowed to gather, they rescheduled their wedding to the end of June.  A few changes were made like moving the reception to The Waverly so everyone could enjoy a nice dinner indoors.  They chose to keep the ceremony short so everyone wouldn't have to be out in the sun and humidity for longer than necessary.  They did a First Look so that we could get pictures done before the ceremony so everyone looked fresh and beautiful.

A great team of vendors worked together to make sure they had a perfect day.  To Honor You Weddings and Special Events set up the arch, decorated the tables at the reception and provided the music during the wedding and reception.  Ann's Flowers provided bouquets of white roses and lilies for the ladies and the arch.  Give Me Glam and Jessie Lee Hair Artistry did an amazing job of making Abby and her whole bridal party look and feel beautiful.

It was a great summer day.  Abby's best friends from childhood shared in their celebration.  Ryan, his brothers and his friend had plenty of fun getting ready in their own suite.  It was all smiles as they said their vows in front of friends and family.  After pictures on the beach we headed over to The Waverly for their first dance, toasts and cake cutting.  The party continued after we left and I'll bet that it lasted late into the night.

I am honored to have gotten to know Abby and Ryan and capture these memories that their whole family will have forever.

Why Staying at Home Isn't So Bad Three weeks ago when states started issuing stay at home orders, we wanted to do our part to socially distance and try to keep not only ourselves healthy but those that we cared about.  Florida was one of the last states to require non essential businesses to close but we had already stopped making unnecessary trips to the stores or to see friends.  As a photographer who specializes in photographing people, this time is challenging and photo shoots have been delayed and will be rescheduled at a later time.

It's great that we are checking on each other to make sure that we are ok both medically and emotionally.  As many people are feeling confined to their spaces inside their home, I realize how much space I really have.  It's not that we have a huge mansion, it's that Mike and I spent almost three years living together in our vehicle and sleeping in a 10'x10' tent, by choice.

What you may not know about us is that in 2015, we sold our house in Key Largo, Florida and decided to take a very long road trip.  We've always been travelers and love exploring, so without the physical and financial constraints of a house and mortgage, we wanted to figure out how to make it work.  We had bought a Ford Edge in the spring and packed it with everything we thought we'd need or want for about six months of living on the road.  We each packed one carry on size suitcase that we'd use daily and filled up a third suitcase with backup clothes like jeans, jackets and sweaters for cooler weather because we really didn't know where we were going.  We took a small cooler, a computer, our camera gear and an atlas.  That first road trip took us from Florida to Michigan, through Canada to Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec.  We traveled to Maine and all of the northeast states before ending up in Washington DC.  From there we traveled west to Colorado, then flew to Alaska where we spent three weeks before flying back to Colorado, driving to Michigan, then Toronto, Tennessee, North Carolina then back to Florida.  Over the course of approximately six months, we traveled more than 25,000 miles together in the Ford Edge.

Whereas most people would figure that was a great trip and been happy with all the experiences they had, we realized that we didn't want to stop.  We took the month of January reorganizing and set out for another year.  We had done a pretty good job packing the first time and we only added a couple of things for the next roadtrip.  Mike packed a guitar so he could learn to play it and I packed more spices and recipes for cooking.  We spent 2016 on the road and never made it west of Utah.  Mike and I got better at living together in our small spaces and we figured out how little we really needed in order to be happy.  We lived out of our two suitcases, discovered monthly rentals, explored the country and took over 40,000 photographs.

What we realized is that the more we traveled and explored, the more places we wanted to go.  So in 2017 we had an opportunity to spend a month in Bali that we couldn't pass up.  That was an amazing trip and we were figuring out the best way to spend the entire summer in Alaska.  We bought a truck which gave us more room in the back to pack our stuff but less living room in the vehicle so we were closer than ever.  We borrowed my sister's four person tent, found a 20 years old sleeping bag and borrowed another.  We bought an air mattress that we could put in the back of the truck or in a tent, added pillows and blankets and went on the road for the third time.

We traveled from Florida all the way to the West Coast and up through California, Oregon and Washington.  We drove north through Canada on the famed Alaskan Highway.  After three unforgettable months of salmon fishing, exploring, and photographing the bears and Northern Lights, we returned through Canada and spent the rest of the year working our way back across the country.  By the end of 2017 we had been to three foreign countries, 25 states, 14 National Parks and sat through 30,000 miles together in the truck.

Finally in 2018 we were ready to have a home base and start a different journey that has led me to where I am today.  Right now I'm being asked to stay at home for my own health.  I look around at my three bedroom house with three indoor bathrooms, a stove and refrigerator that both work.  I can walk outside and sit in a chair on my patio and even swim in our small pool.  Mike and I can choose to be in the same room together or we can move to opposite sides of the house.  When I wake up in the morning, I don't have to worry about standing outside in 40 degree temperatures and try to get a camp stove going to make coffee in my borrowed JetBoil coffee maker.  I can go for a walk around my neighborhood or get on my bike.  I have internet access, cable tv, electricity, heat and air conditioning.

So when people ask me how I'm doing, I have to say that I'm doing really well.  I have a LOT of room, I'm married to someone that I enjoy being around and I don't have to wonder where in the world (literally) I may have to set up our tent in a couple of days.

It's easy to miss what we can't do or what we don't have access to immediately, but spending three years living on the road, away from friends and family while sleeping in a tent makes me appreciate more what I have today.

Venice Fishing Pier Family Photography Session I have to admit that Tony, Carol and Jana are close family friends.  We all met in Colorado decades ago and moving to Florida hasn't changed our love for each other at all.  With their youngest daughter Jana getting ready to graduate high school, coming to Florida for Spring Break was something they all were looking forward to.  As the temperature dropped into the 30's in Denver, they flew into a heatwave in Florida.  Jana brought her friend and they spent every day at the beach and every evening giggling and watching (mostly bad) movies with us.  Carol relaxed by the pool, embracing Social Distancing.  Tony went fishing, explored the area, and walked the beaches for shark's teeth.  We had a great week together and created even more memories that will last a lifetime.

With the beaches getting ready to close because of the Coronavirus outbreak, we took advantage of one of the last beach days to take photos at Venice Pier.  The beach and Sharky's was less crowded than normal as people were starting to stay home more.  We took advantage of the opportunity to get some great family pictures under the pier and then moved onto the beach as the sun finally started to set.

As with all vacations, the time felt too short and we were sad to see them leave.  But they will always have great memories and family photos to look back on this very unique time.

Boca Grande Family Photo Session at Boca Grande Club Meaghan's family have a busy life in Connecticut and were looking forward to Spring Break in Florida.  They were coming down to spend a week with her parents who were staying at the beautiful Boca Grande Club.  They had never been to Boca Grande before so we talked about different spots around the island for their family photo session but ultimately decided that with two young boys, it would be easier for everyone if we had our session at the Club.

We talked about how to prepare the family for the shoot including ideas for things to wear, bringing snacks, toys and music for the boys, as well as a blanket to sit on.  We scouted locations and knew we found a great spot when we came across the tree swing and banyan tree.  Although I like to have shoots around sunset, with the recent time change and sun setting later, Meaghan knew it would be better to have the session around 5 p.m. before the boys got tired.

We had a gorgeous day for their session.  The family coordinated in different shades of blue and looked fantastic.  I loved Meaghan and Daniel from the first moment I met them and was charmed by their two sons.  Her parents are great and enjoyed being part of the photos.  They did a great job of helping us corral and entertain the boys as we worked on different combinations of family shots.

In the end we lost track of time because we were having so much fun.  Our one hour session turned into almost two as we moved from the swing to the tree, then gazebo and finally the beach.  The family's personality shined through as they laughed with each other.  The boys played in the sand and ran around the beach (just as kids should).  I took some posed shots and a lot of natural photos of the family just enjoying their time together.

Now that Spring Break is over and they are back home, Meaghan is already planning her photo session for next year.  I love that I will get to watch and photograph her boys as they continue to grow up and change.  Thank you for a wonderful day.

Blind Pass Beach Surprise Engagement Session with Nick and Bekka Nick was excited when we talked in January.  He was planning a trip to Englewood with his girlfriend of two years and was going to propose.  He wanted to make it really special and make sure they'd remember it forever.  We came up with a plan that I'd be at the beach before they arrived and photograph the entire proposal.  He was confident she'd say YES and then we could take engagement photos afterwards.  We also discussed special places for them to go for dinner and he made reservations at The Waverly.

They flew from Michigan to Florida on Wednesday and he messaged me that they were in town.  We had discussed meeting up that evening but he couldn't sneak away from Bekka.  We finalized our plan for where he would do the proposal on Blind Pass Beach on Manasota Key.  Mike and I arrived to the beach around 5:30, scouted out the light and the amount of people at the beach and sent a couple of final texts to Nick.  At 5:50 I got a text that said, "Here".

They walked down to the beach, made a quick right and Nick dropped down on his knee.  We were standing down the beach using our long 200-500mm lens and captured the proposal as planned.

He was right.  She laughed, then cried, said YES,  they hugged and kissed.  She finally looked over and saw us with the cameras so it was time to approach.  She admitted a little while later that this was her dream.  The proposal, the ring, beautiful photos, a great was a perfect evening that went off as planned.

What she didn't know at the time was there was still more in store for her.  Nick had not only arranged a great dinner but had organized a surprise engagement party back in Michigan after they got home.  All of her friends knew that he was going to propose and he was able to use the engagement photos to create a beautiful slideshow of their time together to show to everyone.

I haven't heard when or where they will finally get married but I can see how much they love each other and know they have a great life ahead of them.

Englewood Park Wedding with Sheana & Joby February is their month of love and celebration.  February is when they both have their birthdays, when they met more than 10 years ago, and when they got engaged more than five years ago.  It seemed fitting that this is when they also got married.  Originally they were planning a fall wedding, but when Sheana's great grandmother became terminally ill, they moved up the date of the wedding so that she could celebrate with them and share in their joy.

Sheana is one of the most caring people that I've had the pleasure of meeting.  She has put her life on hold to take care of her family and said she felt guilty about having attention on her for their wedding day.  Joby is so supportive of Sheana and her great grandmother, traveling across the state for work during the week and back to Englewood on the weekends so they can all be together.

Planning a wedding in just two weeks is no simple task but they chose Lemon Bay Rotary Park in Englewood because of the beautiful view of the Intercoastal Waterway.  They decided to get married just before sunset and their friend officiated.  Sheana's dad beamed as he walked her down the aisle and their dog acted as ring bearer (delivering the rings right on cue)!

Friends came together on short notice to support and celebrate with them on this special day.  They now have beautiful photos and memories of that day where all the focus was on them, just as it should have been.

Englewood Beach Wedding with Judy and Michael Their love story is more than 22 years in the making.  They fell in love in the 80's but the timing wasn't right for them to spend their lives together.  Judy told me that fate brought them back together after all of these years and this time it was meant to be.

They invited their closest friends and family to Englewood Beach for a sunset ceremony.  They were surrounded by love as they spoke their vows and exchanged rings on this beautiful night.  It was important to them to have pictures with their families and we were rewarded with a stunning sunset.

They enjoyed a nice dinner across the street at The Waverly which did a great job of decorating for them.

I wish them love and happiness in their lives together and know that this time it will last forever.

Palm Island Resort Wedding with Catherine and Kevin They agreed to meet for drinks, hours later they knew they had a connection.  They both have children from previous marriages but this only makes their family stronger. They have known each other for years and decided to start their new lives together in Florida.

Getting married at Palm Island Resort after the new year was a chance for the whole family to come together to celebrate.  A last minute change from a beach ceremony to the tent due to potential storms didn't dampen their spirit.  They were all smiles as we took a few family and candid photos before making our way to the tent.

To Honor You Weddings and Special Events did a beautiful job of preparing the site.  Ana at Venetian Flowers was onsite to create the flower arrangements and Cake Concepts delivered the gorgeous (and delicious) cake for the evening.

Kevin arrived with his groomsmen and couldn't wait to start. Catherine arrived via golf cart and was walked down the aisle by her son.  Their children stood beside them as they vowed their love to each other.

Dinner and dancing continued throughout the evening as DJ Steve Ash kept the music playing.  It was a great celebration for this wonderful couple.

Englewood Beach Wedding on Manasota Key with Sarah & Tom Sarah's mom reached out to me over a year ago to tell me about her daughter's wedding.  She was excited about helping to plan it and we set up a meeting in April for when they came down to visit.  Sarah spent a busy few days seeing different vendors but by the time she went home, her plan was in place.

More than 30 family and friends flew into Florida for the Christmas holiday.  I met them again the day before the ceremony to walk through our final details.  The wedding was taking place on Englewood Beach.  Instead of a traditional arch, they chose a cross with flowers to celebrate her father.  Her mother and grandfather walked her down the aisle where she beamed looking into Tom's face.  They had a traditional ceremony with singers, readings, prayers and vows.  Thirty minutes later, in front of God and family, they became husband and wife.  We spent time at the beach taking family portraits and couples photos before moving the celebration across the street to the Waverly.

The party continued as dinner was served and DJ Steve Ash got the dance floor rocking.  The night wouldn't have been complete without their sparkler exit and they drove off to their suite to start their lives together.

Boca Grande Family Photography Session The cold weather in Indiana was enough for Tim to decide to book a family getaway to Florida in just three days.  Boca Grande is a special place for Tim and Kilee because she grew up visiting her grandparents who live there.  In 2012 they got married on Banyan Street and Tim told me that's where he wanted to take photographs of his young family.

It was a cool Florida day that we met but it still felt great to them.  Kilee's vision for her family photos was to capture the grandeur of the banyan trees and keep them light and natural.  They were really open to the fact that young children don't always look at or smile for a camera and were happy just to have great pictures of their family, even if they were eating crackers.  Their oldest daughter LOVED the camera and claimed she might want to be a model when she grows up (she definitely has the personality for it).  I kept them moving and laughing as we worked around garbage cans, cars driving down the street, skateboarders, and stop signs.

At the end of Banyan Street is access to the beach so we finished our session there.  The water was high and the waves were rolling in but that didn't stop this group from getting in.  Rogue waves crashed against us but it led to more smiles and fun.  The temperature dropped as the sun set and it was time for us all to head home just a little bit wet.

Back home in Indiana, they will always have great memories of their Florida vacation with their precious little girls.

Stump Pass Beach State Park Family Photography Session Anna called me just before Christmas because her family was coming to Englewood to celebrate the holidays.  Her father has a winter home here and they come regularly, staying on Manasota Key to enjoy the beaches.  We met at Stump Pass Beach State Park to try to find our own niche of sand for privacy but it was busier than usual due to the holidays.

We got acquainted and comfortable together as we took photographs along the boardwalk.  Anna's three boys didn't mind goofing around and having a bit of fun, which helped me capture a little bit of their natural personalities.  As the sun got lower in the sky, we moved to the beach area.  Anna's father came along for the session and we photographed him with the family as well.

I learned that the family has lived all over the world during the years Kirk has worked with Ford.  They love their new home in New York but are still travelers at heart (just like Mike and I).  I wish we'd had days to swap stories and learn more about them but as soon as the sun set, the park ranger was ready to lock the gate!

Meeting Anna, Kirk and their family is the reason I love my job.  I hope we get the chance to connect again the next time they come down.

Manasota Beach Wedding with Felicia and Todd They met five years ago at a gym.  They are both fighters and winners in their divisions.  Todd Coppinger fights in the Welterweight division and Felicia Spencer is the former Invicta FC Featherweight Champion and now competes in the Featherweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

I met them less than two weeks before their wedding when we all gathered to walk around the ceremony site at a house on Manasota Key. It was a private family ceremony but they had all of the details planned out.  Todd got up early to set up and arrange the arch, draping and flowers in the sand.  Her mom picked up the bridal bouquet from Stevens the Florist South and her brother was there to greet us and their officiant at the site.

Todd arrived before Felicia and made his way down to the beach where he worked to finalize his vows.  When Felicia arrived we took a few minutes to capture bridal portraits before her dad walked her down the aisle.

The ceremony was beautiful as they spoke from their hearts and families looked on.  We took beach photos before moving into a beautiful garden area to capture a few more unique images.  Since they are both fighters we were able to create some fun images just for them which captured their unique personalities.  Before I knew it our time was finished and they were headed to lunch.

I am grateful I had the chance to photograph this amazing couple and they have a new fan to root them on in their fights (in the ring) ahead.

Stump Pass Beach State Park Family Photo Shoot Kyle called me from Kentucky wanting a family photo session while they were visiting Englewood over Thanksgiving.  Kyle and Amanda, their two small children and his parents met me at Stump Pass Beach State Park an hour before sunset and we had a great time.  We started with some pictures along one of the boardwalks before moving to the beach as golden hour approached.  You never know what to expect with two young children but we gave them breaks while taking different combinations of group pictures.  Some of our favorite pictures of the kids were while they were just playing around in between being called to stand and pose.  The time went fast and we had a gorgeous sunset to enjoy.  I knew it was a great shoot when the oldest daughter wanted to write a message in the sand before we left and it said, "I Love It!"  They had to leave the next day but they went home with great memories and beautiful family photos.

Engagement Photo Shoot with Tanya and Jeff Tanya and Jeff met several years ago when they both boarded a bus going to a Detroit Tigers game.  Three years later they are happily planning their spring wedding in the Dominican Republic.  As the temperatures dropped in late October in Michigan, they decided it was time for a warm weather get a way to Ft Myers, Florida.  Tanya's mom Sara found me and after several conversations, we decided that Ft. Myers Beach would be a great place to take engagement photos.  Not every couple takes the time to have engagement photos taken but I believe it is an opportunity to capture this special time and start to get comfortable in front of the camera.

Tanya and Jeff had an eventful and stressful day leading up to our session time but once everyone arrived it was all laughter and smiles.  Ft. Myers Beach has several great photo areas and we decided to take advantage of the pier and Bowditch Point Regional Park.  While discussing what they wanted for their session it was decided that trees and the beach were the most important elements.  Jeff's only request was that I capture an image that they could enlarge and hang on their wall.  I did my best!

Once they started getting comfortable in front of the lens, we were able to capture real moments and smiles.  I encouraged them to play and have fun with each other and their faces reflected the love they have for each other.

They are planning their spring wedding in the Dominican Republic and I know it will be beautiful.  Congratulations to two wonderful people!

Palm Island Wedding with April and Brent I first met April and Brent in the spring as they were planning their wedding with To Honor You Weddings and Special Events.  Brent was the willing groom set on doing everything April dreamed of, including having his picture taken.  They spent months planning every detail of their wedding and when we all met again on Palm Island a few days before the ceremony, we visualized every aspect of their day.  Mother Nature had a different plan for everyone because on Friday, Tropical Storm Nestor formed in the Gulf of Mexico bringing heavy thunderstorms, tornado warnings and strong winds to the area.  The decision was made on Saturday that for the safety of the wedding party and guests, the beach ceremony would be moved under the tent.  The wedding team worked together on the spot, creating a beautiful environment for the ceremony.  Ana at Venetian Flowers created floral arrangements and draping on the spot to fit the new location. Something Borrowed provided a gorgeous door which served as a backdrop for the ceremony.  Chairs were arranged, rose petals laid down in the aisle and table arrangements were set.

April and the women spent the afternoon having their hair and makeup done by Shear Sailing while Brent and the groomsmen hung out by the pool.  It was mimosas, football on the tv, and smiles as the ladies got pampered.  Finally it was Brent's turn to get ready and I could tell he was excited to get to see his bride in a few minutes.  After a loving prayer and boutonnieres arranged, it was a short golf cart ride to the ceremony.

They were surrounded by their closest family and friends as they exchanged vows.  The family poured unity sand bringing everyone together as one.

After some family formals we were able to get down to the beach for some of our favorite photos of the day.  The wind was still blowing 25+ mph but we took advantage of that with April's 20ft veil and created one of my favorite photographs of the day.  We took more bridal pictures as the sun set and the storm blew around behind us.  It was moody but fabulous and completely unforgettable. Rod Baker Video was there as well to capture every moment of the day.

The storm held off until dinner time when everyone was safely back under the tent.  The pounding rain didn't slow down the dancing on the floor with music provided by DJ Steve.  Everyone loved the beautiful and delicious cake by Cake Concepts.  The rain stopped in time for a few more pictures on the dock and April and Brent got the sparkler exit they planned for.  This was a day that reminds me no matter how much we plan and think we can control what happens around us, God has his own plan.  By accepting what was meant to be it was a beautiful and UNFORGETTABLE day of love, surrounded by people that mean the most.

Palm Island Family Vacation Palm Island Florida is a special place with great family memories for Ashley.  Her mother and father in law used to own a house on this small island, accessible only by ferry.  Although they sold the home, the extended family still gathers here every few years to enjoy time together on the beach and in the pool.  Ashley decided this year that it would be a great opportunity to get family portraits taken, at the end of the week once they were all tan!

Palm Island may be small but it is full of charm and photographic opportunities.  Four families were gathered and we spent two hours before sunset taking different combinations of family photos.  The five children at times were willing to stand and smile, but in the end kids are kids and a two hour photo session can be tiring.  Rather than force the children into smiling for the camera, I wanted the true nature of the kids to shine through.  They did so with plenty of funny looks, playing in the sand (we were at the beach after all) and sometimes they just didn't want to be in the photo.  All in all everyone did great and we had lots of smiles and laughs.

I hope these pictures remind this great family of this special time in their lives.

Manasota Beach Club Wedding with Steve and Ann It started as a joke, "Lets have a Hawaiian themed wedding...."  But the idea quickly caught on and ideas began to form.  Each family could wear a different color.  The bride and groom could wear matching outfits.  Tropical flowers, fruity drinks, walking barefoot, pictures on the beach...suddenly it was a reality.  Technically, Steve and Ann got married a year ago in a quiet private ceremony.  This time around, it was a celebration to bring both sides of the family together.  It was important to them to include their children and grandchildren in every aspect of the day, so they did.  Manasota Beach Club on Manasota Key provided the Florida charm as well as the catering and the beach themed cake.  It was a relaxed, picture perfect day that the whole family will always remember.

Manasota Key Wedding with Rachel and Jason Some brides dream of big weddings and being the center of attention.  The opposite was true for Rachel and Jason.  They wanted a simple wedding surrounded by their closest family and friends.  The first time I met them they said to me, "We'll be the easiest couple you'll ever work with."  While that may certainly be true, it didn't lessen my desire to capture the most beautiful photos of them and their wedding day that I could.

They chose to get married at the Tamarind Gulf and Bay Condominium on Manasota Key because their family has vacationed there for years.  It was a meaningful location to them and it provided an opportunity for the family to come for a week long celebration.  The wedding was organized by local wedding planner, Sheryl Ash of To Honor You...Weddings and Special Events.  Music was provided by DJ Steve, Steve Ash and the beautiful bridal bouquets were created by Ana at Venetian Flowers.

Although the ceremony was simple, I loved that they poured and drank wine hand crafted by her grandmother.  They also chose to share their first dance immediately after the ceremony with the family looking on.

What started as a first date, because he was bored and asked her out, has now turned into a lifetime of love and memories to come.  Congratulations.

Manasota Key Wedding with Tara and Cory When I met Tara and Cory, I had to ask why after 19 years and two children together, they were finally getting married.  Cory laughed and told me they were doing everything backwards.  They started with a family and now as the oldest was in college and the youngest was finishing high school, they knew that they still really loved each other and wanted to spend the rest of their lives together.  The children never thought this day would come and you could feel the love the whole family shared.

They started with a sweet gift exchange for the whole family, with special notes attached.  Cory and his son got ready, having decided at the last minute to add ties to their outfits and deciding what color socks to wear.  The women got into their dresses, attaching Tara's "something old" and "something borrowed" to the inside of her dress.  Her daughter helped her into the dress and attached her veil.  After a couple of minutes to reflect, the music started and she joined Cory to say their vows and start the next chapter of their lives together.

After the small family ceremony, we went to Stump Pass State Park for pictures with the whole family.  It was all laughter and smiles as they enjoyed the water and most importantly each other.  Tara was going to pretend to throw her bouquet but I thought, what fun is that?  Let's actually do it!  I loved that Cory ran in to make sure that their 17 year old daughter DID NOT catch the bouquet.  The sun set on their day and our time together but we are all left with unforgettable memories and photographs of this wonderful day.

Englewood Fire Department Fire Training Fire photography isn't my usual genre but I've been watching the Englewood Fire Department use a home in our neighborhood as a training exercise for the last couple of months.  It's my understanding that the owner is going to build a new home on his land but wanted the firefighters to be able to train both new cadets and experienced firefighters.  As I was out for my morning bike ride, I noticed increased activity at the house and found out that it was all coming down.  I got permission to photograph their training and came back with the camera.  I spent three hours with the department and watched in fascination as these professionals did an amazing job.  Everyone was so kind and happy to be able to do this.  At times I got permission to approach the house even closer although I was mostly using a 200-500mm lens and could stay away from the heat and smoke.  I took over 400 photographs which I gave the fire department for their use.  Here are a few of my favorites, because of the raging fire of course.

Venice Yacht Club Wedding with Frani and John It's not everyday that I get to meet such a large wonderful family.  Frani and John were introduced to each other by their children who thought they might hit it off.  Less than a year later, they celebrated their love with a small family church ceremony and reception at the Venice Yacht Club.  Frani has four beautiful daughters and John has four handsome sons that made up their wedding party.  We decided we'd take the family portraits at the Venice Jetty among the rocks.  I was a little worried when I saw the women wearing two inch heels but they didn't hesitate when I asked them to climb around the rocks to find a good spot to stand.  I could tell that these children would do anything for their parents.  Fortunately no one slipped and we got an amazing photograph of the whole family.

Cocktail hour at the Venice Yacht Club was filled with smiles and love.  Families reunited and friends came together.  Dinner and dancing upstairs afterwards was the perfect end to a day they will always remember and cherish.

Siesta Key Beach Wedding with Tori and Sabian Sometimes it takes time to find the right person.  For Tori and Sabian, the perfect love took time, patience and determination.  They were surrounded by their children, parents, friends and co-workers on a beautiful Saturday afternoon.  We were honored to spend time with their families, smiling and laughing as we celebrated their special day.  It was a beautiful day at Siesta Key Beach and their choice of colors stood out beautifully against the blue sky and perfect white sand.  They had a fun reception at the Boatyard Waterfront Bar and Grill afterward with great food and dancing that lasted long after we went home.

Siesta Key Beach Wedding with Tim and Sarah I first met Sarah and Tim in January when they called about having engagement pictures taken on the beach.  We connected immediately and had a great time during the shoot.  They hadn't decided where or when they were going to get married at that point so I was a little surprised when a couple of weeks later she called to ask if I was available on March 2nd to photograph their wedding.  I wouldn't miss the chance to be there on their special day so after a few more phone calls to finalize the time and location, it was all set.

They planned the wedding themselves.  Tim used to live in Sarasota but moved to Minnesota to be with Sarah.  The night before the wedding as they were flying into Tampa, they were delayed several hours at the airport by a snow storm that was hitting the north.  They arrived well into the night and had a hotel booked in Tampa to catch a couple of hours of sleep.  The next morning they loaded up the family in the SUV and drove to Sarasota to start their preparations.  As usual, the hairdresser ran long, there was no time for lunch, and six people were sharing one hotel room to get changed in.  Somehow we all made it work and got back on time for their "first look".  The smiles warmed our hearts and they took a few minutes to enjoy their time alone, all dressed up and ready to say "I Do."

We made our way to Siesta Key Beach where they had a small family ceremony and had time to relax and enjoy their new status as husband and wife while watching the sunset.  The day ended with the best burgers in town at The Cottage, with stories and memories to last a life time.

Myakka State Park Family Photo Session to Celebrate 50th Anniversary Life is full of ups and downs and to see a couple celebrate fifty years together is always amazing.  From the moment Joe reached out to me to tell me that his parents were flying down to Florida to celebrate this milestone and wanted family pictures taken, I was honored to be chosen.  From our first conversation we knew that we would use Myakka State Park, east of Sarasota, as the backdrop for this family session.  The variety of old Florida trees, the Canopy trail, suspension bridge, river views, benches, and log cabin were just some of the backdrops we used but the real star of the day was the family.  Joe and Cathy have two beautiful children who were champions when it came to posing and being patient.  Al and Shirley were so kind and sweet and seemed as happy to watch everything going on behind the scenes as they were in front of the camera.

My two favorite quotes of the day came from Al when I tried to give him directions to elicit a response.  The first time I asked him to whisper something sweet in his wife's ear and he replied, "What are we having for dinner?"

The biggest smile came though when I asked him to look into his wife's eyes and he said, "I can't do it."  I don't know why but it made everyone laugh.  I'm sure that in fifty years of marriage he has not only whispered thousands of sweet sentiments into his wife's ears but has looked into her beautiful face every day.

It was easy to see that this family loved each other with all their hearts and that although they may not live in the same state anymore, that the time they are able to spend together is valuable.  We are very fortunate to have been able to get to know this wonderful family and hope to follow them throughout the rest of their journey.

Phillippi Estate Park Engagement Session with Tim and Sarah It was a last minute decision and a late night text from Sarah that led me to meet this wonderful couple.  Tim and Sarah from Mankato, Minnesota were wrapping up a week in Sarasota, getting Tim's condo ready for the next step in their lives.  They were preparing to fly home from sunny, beautiful Florida back into Minnesota's winter cold and decided they really wanted their engagement photos taken on Siesta Key.  With only a day to prepare and not having brought any clothes for an engagement shoot, they pulled together what they had (along with a fabulous new pair of black high heeled shoes), and met me at Phillippi Estate Park.  I could tell it was true love from the moment he helped her out of his truck.  We talked and laughed and took advantage of the beautiful park atmosphere.  The gazebo provided a nice backdrop for some portraits and the old live oak trees and Spanish moss remind me of old Florida.  They couldn't stop smiling and kissing as we moved from spot to spot.

With the golden hour approaching we headed to the north end of Siesta Key.  Bare feet, waves rolling in, an abandoned sailboat and some rusted pilings were the perfect backdrop to tell their love story.

An Unexpected Experience at Arches National Park A couple of weeks ago we were in Utah and spent several days around Canyonlands National Park.  We were hiking, taking pictures, camping and in general having a great time seeing new things.  Although we have been to Arches and Canyonlands before, we really wanted to spend more time in Island in the Sky and the Needles.  Our visit coincided with a new moon which meant we had an opportunity for great Milky Way shots in this Dark Sky area.  After a couple of nights shooting the Milky Way around the Needles, we thought we'd take our last opportunity to shoot the Milky Way at Arches National Park.  We spent a good portion of the day driving around and hiking around, trying to decide where we wanted to go back to once the sun set.  Mike used his Photo Pills program and we decided that Turret Arch, across from the North and South Windows would have the Milky Way aligned through it between 9:30-11:30 that night.  With our plan in place, we drove further into the park to find a place to watch the sunset.

We had purposely kept all of our camping/dinner supplies in the truck and found a picnic table area across from Balanced Rock.  As the sky darkened we cooked our dinner and got all of our camera equipment ready to go.  Around 9:30 we pulled back into the parking lot of the Windows and were immediately struck by how many cars were parked in the lot that late.  It was our first sign that we weren't going to be the only one out tonight but we sure weren't expecting that many cars on a Friday night.  We gathered our cameras, tripods, and flashlights and started on the trail toward Turret Arch.  We immediately saw that there was a bright light, right up by where we were headed.  I kept thinking it must be another photographer getting into position although the light never moved.  As we came closer we started to hear a few voices and as we came up on the rocks which we had scouted earlier in the day, we saw a group of no less than 25 people huddled together with their cameras facing the same arch.  Apparently we weren't the only ones with this idea but it did confirm to me that we had picked a good location, all on our own.  Fortunately no one was in the position off on the right hand side of the Arch that we were planning on setting up.  I determined that the light that had guided us to this point was in fact a spot light aimed at the face of the arch.  We set up our tripods in front of the spotlight and was relieved when someone else asked if they were going to turn that spotlight off.  The group leader said yes, so we used the light to set up our cameras and get into position.  After a few minutes the spotlight was in fact turned off and Mike and I spent the next several minutes taking long exposures of the Arch with the stars behind.

From listening to conversations the group was having, our guess was that it was a camera club versus a class, as most people seemed to know each other.  There was definitely a leader who did occasionally answer a camera question or two.  As Mike and I shot away, we noted that we didn't hear any clicking coming from their cameras and began to wonder what exactly they were doing below us.  Then out of nowhere the group leader tells his group to get ready to take pictures (Mike and I had been shooting for almost 20 minutes at that point, pretty happy with what we'd been getting).  They start fussing and asking about shutter speeds and ISO, and the group leader comes back up to our rock and turns the spotlight on directly behind us.  The problem with this is that it now cast a 40 ft silhouette on the Arch that everyone is about to photograph.  Not to mention it blinds us.  Immediately after turning it on the group leader runs up to the arch and is going to enter it.

To say that I was annoyed would be kind.  To say I was upset and confused would also be kind.  I finally called out to the group leader, "are you going to leave this light on because it's casting our shadow on the arch?".  His reply was a quick, "You have to move!"  This was not said kindly or askingly.  This felt like an order from someone I've never met before who just ruined my shot.  Three responses came to me.  First, that we could stay here (we've been in this position, away from his group for more than 30 minutes and hadn't bothered him) and we could ruin everyone's shot for the rest of the night.  Second, I could turn that obnoxious light out and start a fight.  Or third, move.  Mike and I looked at each other and did the right thing.  We grabbed our lights, tripods and cameras and made a move down closer to their group.  Upset at this point, I felt like "screw you then, I'm going to barge right into the middle of your group and claim a spot for myself."  So that's what I did.  A photographer on my left who could have gotten upset with where I placed my tripod in anger said to me a couple of minutes later, "Yeah I got kicked out of my spot by the group too."  That's when I realized that not everyone there was with this same group.

What the group leader ended up doing was using this obnoxious spotlight on the front of the Arch.  He placed another light behind the Arch to light up the inside which I immediately realized I loved.  Then he kept walking around with his flashlight, light painting grasses in my foreground to which I wanted to tell him to keep away from me.  After about 20 minutes of shooting in this direction, the leader tells the group that they should change up the position of their shots and move up to the part of the rock that Mike and I had just been kicked off of.  I quickly grab my tripod and got back into my original position along with my new photo friend beside me.  With the spotlight still in it's same position, now adding too much light to a particle bush that the rest of the group had in the foreground of their wide angle shot, the leader took the light 150 yards away to the other side of the arch to light it.  Now I realized that he could have done that from the beginning without ever having so rudely told us to move but I'd come to terms that this photo leader wouldn't be someone I'd ever respect or follow.

We continued to photograph until around 11:30 and pleased with what we had shot and still annoyed by the group, we decided it was time for us to leave.  We had scouted a second position behind South Window and decided to walk back there to take a few more shots of a different view.  Finally around midnight we decided to head back to camp which was an hour away, knowing that we were going to get up around 5:45 to get in position for a sunrise shot at Mesa Arch.

Away from the craziness we were able to laugh at ourselves and at the situation.  Mike said at one point he felt like it we couldn't beat them, join them.  The night didn't go how we had anticipated but thinking about it later and looking at our pictures, it was a happy accident that we had that experience.  We had never shot natural landscape at night before and having those additional lights to highlight the arch made for terrific shots.  Looking at our pictures without the light and with the light, we definitely like the light.  I still feel like that particular group leader was a bully but most photographers are pretty welcoming people.  Overall we had a fun time and an experience we won't forget.

Full Spotlight on when we initially arrive.  The hotspot on the right is where we had originally planned on setting up and other photographers in their position more in front of the arch.

Our first silhouette shots

Nice silhouette with the Milky Way moving into position behind the arch.

Our 40 ft shadows

When the spotlight is turned back on behind us, our shadows are now cast 1/3 way up the formation for everyone to see/photograph.

Back in our position

After moving down out of the spotlight to stand with the rest of the group, the group leader encouraged everyone to reposition themselves.  I go back up to my original position.  I am the one squatting in the spotlight, trying not to cast more shadows.  Mike lags behind taking this shot.  Fortunately that ill placed tree being overlit upset enough of the group that the group leader moved the light to the other side.

Final result

It took a long time getting here but this was Mike's final result.  The lights and Milky Way in a good position and those annoying photographers out of his way.  Every photo has a journey....

April 20

Today we’re heading to the Sunflower Farm in Rutledge, Georgia to ride in a 3 day outdoor cycling festival. It’s called the Bike Ride Across Georgia (BRAG) Spring Tune Up and it begins tomorrow. For the past 23 years cyclists have been meeting in Rutledge to celebrate a new cycling season and begin their preparation for the Big BRAG (7 days) which takes place in June.  It’s a big event…over 800 riders participated in last year’s Spring Tune Up.  It’s our first BRAG and we’re looking forward to it. Should be fun!

After arriving at the Sunflower Farm in the late afternoon we set up camp, registered for the event, then went into the small town of Rutledge to have a look around. After dinner at “Yesterday’s Cafe” we went back to our camp in “tent city” and settled in for the night.

BRAG Day 1

After breakfast we made our way to out to the starting point.  We knew the course would wind through some beautiful, rural, hilly Georgia  countryside. VERY HILLY countryside!  Stephanie and I rode together the first 7.5 miles.  The first mile was pretty easy pedaling, then we ran out of level ground. We were either flying down a hill, or grinding up a hill.  To my surprise, Stephanie would fly by me on every climb. I’d have to get off the seat just to stay close.  We reached the first rest stop, topped off our water bottles, grabbed a snack and rode on. A couple of miles after the rest stop Stephanie reached the halfway point of her ride, turned around and began the return to camp. I’d decided on a 70 mile course so I had a few more hours of fun to look forward to.  I enjoy participating in events like the BRAG. Having so many other riders out on the course helps the time pass quickly. There are always folks to ride and talk with along the way.  Additionally there are always little “competitions” going on whether they are with other riders or just personal challenges.  I enjoyed the 70 miles of twisting and turning through the Georgia countryside, and had a lot of fun. After returning to camp and taking a quick shower we drove to Madison for a late lunch and talked about our rides. I was glad to hear that Stephanie had enjoyed and gained a lot of confidence from the ride (except for the sore butt!). Both of us were looking forward to Saturday’s ride. We decided to ride together and picked a 30 mile course.  After our late lunch we returned to camp and spent some time meeting with several of our “neighbors” sharing stories. We eventually made our way to the stage where a couple of bands were providing entertainment for the evening. It was a good day at BRAG.

Day 2 BRAG

It has been another beautiful day here in Georgia.  After breakfast we prepped our bikes and set out on our ride.  We had rest stops at 10 and 20 miles which helped make this a comfortable ride. In a repeat performance Stephanie proved to be “strong in the hills”.  The rest stops were in small towns so we got a little “local flavor” as we pedaled through Rutledge and Madison. The 30 miles went by quickly and soon were back at camp.  After lunch a lot of folks started packing up and leaving due to predicted thunderstorms. Rain is expected to begin by 8 tomorrow morning and last throughout day. We packed everything in the truck except our tent.  Tomorrow morning we'll make decisions about whether to ride. After a tasty “food truck” dinner in the campground we spent the rest of the evening listening to a string band from Atlanta, followed by an Allman Brothers Tribute Band. The string band was very good; the Tribute band was outstanding.  A crowd (Stephanie and I included) gathered on a sandy area in front of the stage and spent a lot of the evening dancing to the tunes of the Allman Brothers.  Pretty awesome! When the band finished their performance we called it a night.

Day 3 BRAG

At 6 o’clock this morning thunder and lightning woke us up. When we started to take the tent down it started to rain. We got our things packed away about the time it stopped raining.  Perfect timing! You gotta love that…Mother Nature has a good sense of humorJ!  After a cup of coffee we joined hundreds of other riders in the decision to enjoy the 2 awesome days of riding we’ve had at the BRAG Spring Tune Up and move on. The decision was made easy by the threatening sky and the local radar. Would we ride in the BRAG again? Absolutely! It would be fun to participate in this event with a group of friends. Let us know if you’re interested. Right now we are on our way to breakfast. We’re gonna have another look at the radar, pull out a map and head out in search of some blue sky!
